Hey guys, in a pretty in depth keeper league. And am trying to decide what to do.
1)We are allowed 1 keeper each year (+$5 previous salary) This player is then signed to a 2 year deal. 2)We are eligible to put up 1 player for arbitration (we set a blind $ amount on the player, if bidding ends less than said amount you get them for that $, if bidding ends higher we have the option to retain the player for +$2 final bid) This player is signed to a 2 year deal 3) Finally, any player that came up through your minors system, after their first 5 years in the majors they go up for auction. However you retain the right to match the highest bid. You can sign this player to a 1-4 year deal, the length is your choice. I took over the worst team in the league 4 years ago and have drafted my minors players really well and am stacked as far as bats go for the next few years. Soto, Bregman, Albies, Judge, Hiura, Realmuto, among others. My arms are weaker, so this is where my offseason comes into play. As I see it, I have 2 options. 1) Sign Nola as my keeper for $15 and nominate Strasburg as my arbitration player. I would then retain them both for 2 years. 2) Sign Strasburg as my keeper for $23, nominate Charlie Blackmon as my arbitration player, and then let Nola hit the open market, knowing I can match any offer and can sign him for 4 years, but also knowing it will be well above $15. Im not salary strapped by any means. Very interested to hear some opinions. |

This is really only a question that you can answer because only you know the league bidding style.
You want to nominate whoever provides the most overall value between what they would be kept at, and what the bidding would approximately be. Then arbitrate whomever at what you think a fair price is, however if I am reading right...the strategy might be to set your arbitration number low....because if it goes high your right to retain is only +2, so there is no harm in setting a low number and hope everyone sleeps. Nola is coming off a bad year....so he may be lower than you think. Strasburg with the new contract and big playoffs might be high in bidding. I would personally lean Strasburg $23, and then hope everyone is down on Nola's 4 ERA from last year throw a $15-20 arbitration bid and keep your fingers crossed.
