Default Advise needed on trimming down my Michigan Wolverines collection

Good morning fellow collectors. I've been collecting all cards of UM players in college uniform plus the occasional pro uni auto for over 10 years now. But lately I have the feeling that my collection has grown far too large with too many cards in it I don't really care about that much. Plus card companies putting out sooo many cards of players even in college uniform nowadays makes it really hard and expensive to chase after all of them. I mean, do I really need all the 217 college cards of Karan Higdon, a player who didn't have a particularly remarkable career at UM and won't do anything in the NFL? And do I really want all the 100 or so college cards of Brady Panini is throwing at me each year now?

So I'm thinking about drastically trimming down my collection. However, I don't want to part ways with ALL the cards. But I'm having a really hard time deciding which ones to keep. Do I only keep the cards of certain players? And how to decide which players? Or from certain years? Or from certain sets? Do I only keep the autos?

I would love to get some opinions on the matter. How would or did/do you decide what to keep and what to trade/sell?

I'd go with a decent, mid-range guillotine cutter.

KIDDING!!! (Couldn't resist.)

Not the kind of trimming down I had in mind...

Could be effective though

I guess it depends. Focus on just rookie cards (or card), or at least first year card(s) showing an individual in their UofM gear. Does that part focus on just a base, autograph, jersey, or patch, or combo of it? Lots of different ways to look at it.

Make it even more focused by picking one player instead of all Michigan players. Or, you could pick up the Michigan players from only one set each year.

Try focusing on defensive players vs offensive. Go after the really good players that have had success at Michigan and NFL crossing over. Stick to college only products in Michigan uni, they are generally cheaper than their NFL counterparts.

I’m like you, I love collecting Iowa Hawkeyes in Iowa uniform. There’s some players however that I don’t even remember playing for Iowa. I stick to a main few players that I enjoyed watching.

Hope this helps!

Not helpful!

I would be interested in a list of what you wanted to sell.

I have a massive Wolverine collection. After selling off my Brady cards over a decade ago I figured I would hold onto the others. Had some extremely rare Woodson rookies and sold off the PMG as well as another rare Pacific Purple /50 with others. Michigan collectors favor the rookie cards in Wolverine Uniform, I did.

Sell in lots, Michigan Uniform or even trade. If you have rare 90's cards sell or find trade in equal 90's in Michigan uniform. My Wolverine collection was becoming out of hand and I'm sure you were spending too much as well.

If you want to keep collecting without spending, take a hiatus from EBay! Trade with other Michigan collectors and save money and increase your collection. It makes collecting a hobby and not a obsession.

That is what I did and I'm glad I went that route. My opinion.

Thank goodness you were a Wolverine collector and not a Buckeye collector. All that money on Quarterbacks who are complete FLOPS in the NFL. Mike Tomczak and Tim Tupa as the top QB's in the NFL over the past half Century. A lot of wasted coin over that time.

Thanks for all the input so far. At the moment I'm leaning towards doing something kind of similar to what I'm doing with my Chiefs collection: focusing on a handful of players to sort of master collect (with the Chiefs it's the defense players who played in the Super Bowl, with the Wolverines it would be the 2007 and 2008 draft classes) plus keeping or working on putting together a couple of rainbows for some of the other players I enjoyed watching or who are legends and just belong in every UM collection, like Woodson or Howard.

I did the same thing a couple of years ago and thinned things down by focusing on the brands I like. Old school Elite will always be my primary focus, but I also like Contenders Draft, so have been picking those up here and there, as well. I quit buying any sort of event-worn stuff, because Panini saturated the market with it, and it no longer appealed to me.

I'll still stray from that formula if a good looking 1/1 pops up, or one of the few other "off shoots" I collect/hoard pops up, but refocusing has saved me a lot of money and space.

I have a FSU auto collection and only have one for each player except for players I really liked or guys who have the chance to be/are/were something special. ex. Dalvin Cook, Derwin James, Deion Sanders, etc. Thankfully I resisted the urge to go big on Jameis as I only own three haha.
