No. 2 UCLA Baseball Blanks San Francisco, 1-0, in Season Opener - UCLA Official Athletic Site
Not bad, an 11 K, 4 hit, 1 BB Complete Game Shutout on Opening Day of the NCAA Season. Anthony Rendon went 0 for 4 against Stanford. The race to be the #1 pick is on, advantage, Gerrit. I don;t think Cole is quite Strasburg, but I could see him becoming the next Mark Prior (pre-injury that is). |

Does anyone know why Matt Purke was taken out after four shutout innings? TCU won 5-0, so it's not like they were up ten runs and wanted to preserve his arm and get other players' feet wet. Very suspicious. Sonny Gray gave up three runs in the first inning, but then settled down to pitch the next four innings of shutout ball to pick up a win also. Does anyone know if there's one website where you can see all the day's scores for NCAA baseball? I had to go to each school's individual sites to see their results.

ncaa.com has a baseball page, but it didn't have the schedule up from yesterday or today. espn.com shows the Division 1 scores, but no links to the box scores. I know baseballamerica.com will put up results for the Top 25 teams on Mondays, but I can't wait that long. Yeesh.

D1Baseball.com, Your College Baseball Headquarters this site is pretty up to date on all division 1 baseball games.. they will usually be a couple innings behind but pretty close.

I have already got my box seats for the CWS. Ready to watch Cole and Bauer dominate.

Bauer was almost as good as Cole, but I guess he worked too many deep counts.

The scouting reports I read last year said that Cole was a batter draft prospect than Jameson Taillon last year, and far more advanced since he's pitched against tough PAC-10 competition and in the CWS. I have about $700-$800 in Cole cards, so I'd have to say yes, he should at the very least double from current prices by the time the June Draft rolls around. For his short term value, it would be better to see him go #1 overall to the Pirates, but for long term I would rather see him go #2 to the Mariners. Felix-Cole-Pineda, Wowzers! But if Taillon can deal also, Cole and Taillon would be a fun combo to watch also.

I had nothing of his, so I ponied up for two of his Sterling Black Refractor AUTO's at $73 and $75 delivered. He was already projected as the #18 pick in a reliable mock draft, and last season he hit only 14 HR's, not bad to have 4 already, maybe he can move up to the #3-10 pick if he pops out 25 or so.

Be careful of overreacting to pitchers numbers looking extra good this year and hitters numbers looking bad. The rule change to composite bats that "perform" like wood have resulted in anecdotal reports of 70% decreases in Batting Practice Home runs as one oft cited example. While this is good for the game in my opinion, it's going to lower run totals and allow pitchers to pitch inside and pitch to contact which has not been viable in college for a long time. A pitcher like Cole will be good regardless, but be careful of the more "fringy" type of guys suddenly producing low ERAs. On the flip side, maybe you can grab some hitters at a discount when they're not hitting .450 with 25 HR.

I was at friday's game and was sitting in the 2nd row behind home plate. There was a huge net in front of me but somehow a foul ball off a cole fastball landed next to me so I snagged it. I had always wanted a PAC 10 ball too.
