Default Those players everyone loves, but you love to hate

We all have them, those guys who are loved by so many but you can not stand.

There are so many reasons for this, but I am curious who everyone loves to hate.

None of these are POMO for me as they are players I never would have collected. I actually made a little bit off of Harper over the years buying low and selling the few times he was selling high. The others I never thought of collecting.

Here’s mine:

1) Bryce Harper - one of the most overrated players in the game who IMO never lived up to the hype. Super conceited, holds out on making a deal just to say he had the largest deal ever...that was very short lived lol! This guy thinks he is something he is not, enjoy him Philly!

2) Aaron Judge - he had a good rookie year, and since has not lived up to expectations. His fans tote him as the second coming, but instead he can’t stay in the game for long periods without regressing then getting hurt. NYC is ready to give him the keys, but he is really just a mediocre player IMO.

3) Vlad Jr - but but but he can hit bombs! Yes he can, when he is pitched a perfect ball right where he wants it. When he has to show skill at hitting a pitcher who doesn’t want him to hit he fails. He is cocky and is riding the coat tails of his father. Honestly if his father wasn’t who he is, Jr would not have been has highly regarded.

4) David Ortiz - some of this comes from me being a Twins fan and him going away and then becoming a great hitter. However, he is a cheater and thinks he is larger than the game, and his fans let him. I do not like any Boston team, but he takes the cake for worst ever. I will admit he can hit the ball, and was a great DH, but I still can’t stand him.

So who are your guys you love to hate?

If Judge can stay healthy, he's way more than a 'mediocre player'. He's had 153 games since his rookie year, and he's hit 38 HRs with an OPS+ of 150. Not the rate he set during 2017, but it's still pretty damn good.

As long as he can stay on the field, he will produce. I think some people here don't like him just because of the loonies in the Judge thread during his rookie year.

Only 153 games in two years is a failure IMO. Guy can’t stay healthy, already on the bad side of 25, I do not see him ever being healthy again.

The guy is just not what people thought he was, and he will fade away into obscurity. There’s even a good chance he won’t hold the rookie home run record anymore after this season.

You are right, my hatred of him could be raised by his ridiculous fans both here and throughout the Yankee world. I can’t stand them, which translates into hating him.

Disagree with the Judge assessment. Dude has been a monster when healthy. The problem is, he gets banged up alot.

On top of that, he seems like a good dude. Why anyone outside of Boston would dislike him is beyond me.

Harper on the other hand, is a douche, and is hyped even more than Judge, but even when healthy tends to go through some really rough stretches.

The oblique injury was legit, but it's hard to knock a guy much for getting hit by a pitch.

David Ortiz, the beloved juicer that "brought back" the world series to Boston.

Yup, and that injury cost him like two months and came at a time when he was picking up....

Really? He is looking at back to back MVP seasons, and a potential triple crown this year. He think that is all hype, or do you think he will fall short and then stop playing well next year?

Agree with Harper and Vlad. Harper is just a skid mark. And I don’t really hate Vlad, just the prices he’s still commanding. Would be nice to see him come down to affordability.

I like Yeli a lot, but these super awesome numbers for 2 seasons are a giant leap from the first 4 in Miami. I’ve always been hesistant with late bloomers. But definitely don’t dislike him.

Two questions. First, what has he done to make you label him as cocky? Second, have you seen his production in the minors? Because that is why he is so highly regarded.

Love the list, OP. I would add Machado to the list as well.

Most everyone hates Machado, though.

Once prospects graduate and have a big enough sample size to start drawing conclusions from, their minor league stats start to go out of the window

Many players over the years have crushed the minors but failed to find meaningful success at the Major League level aka Quad A Player

Not saying Vlad is this but his prices at call-up assumed Trout like production

Ah, c'mon. It's not like he hit .381/20/78 in 95 games, between AA and AAA, as a 19 year old, last year.

Fair enough, but that isn't what the OP was saying. He stated Vlad was only highly regarded due to his lineage, which is truly absurd. Also, Vlad Jr. has 253 career MLB at-bats. And he's 20 years old. I know it sounds crazy, but it might take him a full season or two to even scratch the surface of his potential. Lest we forget what Mike Trout looked like when he got to the bigs in 2011.

Derek Jeter. I just think he is over rated.

Mike Trout was in shape. Vlad Jr. is fat. Am I doing that right?

1) Couldn't agree more. He is pretty much a one-hit wonder that cares more about his looks and hair than anything else.
2) Don't hate him, but it was fun messing with the overly sensitive Judgeheads in the past.
3) Yep....all bark, no bite so far with this guy. His fans on this board seem overly sensitive as well.
4) Don't hate him at all.
