Default Topps.com Star Wars Living Set

Link from their email hasn't been updated yet with products or prices, but here's the placeholder

https://www.topps.com/cards-collecti...iving-set.html

I'm assuming they'll all be blue starfield vintage stock and $8/card or 3 for $15 like the MLB Living Set.

Are you doing whatever the other long run set was called?

I'm curious if this will eat into those sales at all.

I'm assuming these are all original art-work as well like the MLB set and the blue starfield will always carry the nostalgia factor, whereas the other set don't have a great look to it and those cards have been done over and over with slightly different images.

No but I have done the Living Set since the beginning purchasing only Rookies and players from my team. The idea of having a set like this with original artwork that delivers something new each week is welcomed. If these were screen shot images I don’t believe I would have interest as they really haven’t shown us anything we haven’t seen over and over and over.......

Yeah, I'm curious for the official details and who the artist(s) will be.

And you're right, the artwork, even if it looks photorealistic like a still, is better than just using movie stills.

The only issue is MLB can use TONS of major league players who are all well known, how well will Star Wars sell when the week is Moroff, Two Tubes and Weazel? lol

I feel like this will putter out after a year of big names, but we'll see.

If they follow the MLB plan we will likely see a Veteran Star (Main Character), A rookie (Newer movie or animated Character), and a Veteran Non-Star (auxiliary character) each week.

Has baseball repeated players before?

Although I can see Star Wars using different costumes/outfits (i.e. ANH/ESB/RotJ Lukes) to stretch it out a bit.

But thinking back to Masterwork, they have had 4 releases and 198 unique characters. I guess Galactic Files Reborn and '18 would be good as well to get the pool of likely characters.

They only repeat players if they change teams like Bryce Harper this year and retired players that played for multiple teams ( These will be pretty rarely done). I assume that for Star Wars they will do every costume change at some point. This would allow for a new Luke or Leia, for instance, to be released each year. I hope this would happen anyway.

So we'll likely get 156 cards/year unless they do monthly versus weekly or bi-weekly even.

They'll have plenty of time to catch up with no new movies until 2021.

It will be impossible to run out of Characters imo. Depends on just how deep they want to go. With all the existing movies and animation (Holiday special Fett would be great along with a few Ewoks and Droids characters if needed) then add popular video game characters, books (hot button topic I know), TV (Mandalorian debut will sell some cards) and new movies this can truly go on forever as the Living name implies.

I'm in for the duration (and might quit Living Baseball, which I've bought from the start for this), but I really hope they only use characters from the actual movies and none of the animated series ones (who didn't appear in any of the movies).
I would like a Bea Arthur, Art Carney, and Harvey Korman from the Holiday Special, tho...

Impossible to run out, yes, but will there be enough interest in background ewok #8 or heck even Seek from Ep 1.

For as big as Star Wars is, I'd say you could easily get down to 150 main characters and after that the general audience wont care. Itd just be the hardcore fans and set collectors after that.

Plus at $8/card it's not cheap. Even the 3 for $15 it's still $5ea, so $260/yr for forever basically haha.

Haha. Zero chance.

Ahsoka is bigger than a lot of the side characters from the OT. And animated Darth Maul gets a lot of love as well.

Plus using animated main characters is another way to hook character collectors.

Blah. Done with Topps' gimmicks. I'm still cheesed off by the way they handled their exclusive Ep 1 set and promos at Celebration.

I don't know if the art is specifically commissioned for this set, or if they're using sketch card images. If it's the latter, the only ones I'll pick up are if they use any of mine.

I feel like I am in the minority in that I don't like the Living Baseball Set. If this is very similar, it is an easy pass.

Art by Kris Penix makes it interesting, especially since it is impossible to get all of his crazy sketches.

First set is up:
As part of the Living Set program, Topps will only issue one card per character per film, live-action series or animated series. Two new characters will be offered every week and will be available for purchase for just one week.

So like 6 Darth Vader cards?
ANH
ESB
ROTJ
Revenge of the Sith
Rebels
Rogue One

Anything else? I tried to pick a character with a lot of appearances.

C-3PO
All prequels
All OT
All Sequel Trilogy
Rebels
Rogue one

The art for this set is "all" Kris Penix. All commissioned new larger paintings and no previous sketch cards used as art.

Man, he must be cleaning up with Topps right now between Stellar and now this large contract.

Any word if they're selling large prints signed by Kris like they do with the MLB cards?

I'm also curious on how much of a head start he has on these. Not sure the time it takes to finish one, but two per week for the foreseeable future is a lot of drawing.
