Default Where your RC photos come from

For those seeing my username and expecting a rant on action photography, i'm going to disappoint you with this one. Unless someone else brings it up of course.. If you want to hear any of my rants on that subject look here: https://bit.ly/2MLhddJ or here: https://bit.ly/2MLtij6

Anyway, this last Sunday I happened to catch a live stream from Ken @ Courtside Collectibles who was breaking boxes at the Panini rookie photo shoot. When he wasn't breaking he would point the camera toward one of the area's of the photo shoot, the half court setup. I found it pretty interesting to see the various things they had them do as this is where 90% of RC photos come from it seems like. Ken didn't record any of that unfortunately, but I got to see a couple from start to finish which I'll go over below. I did find other videos documenting the day, however.

@ :15 These are still shots i'm guessing for stuff like the Panini event cards maybe, or box art?
@ 1:25 This is the part of the photo shoot I was watching live.
@ 2:34 It looks like this was a side area where they were capturing dribbling and closeups maybe..? Photos they typically use for Prizm RC's and stuff like that maybe?

@ 3:24 I have no idea what this will be used for, lol
@ 4:40 These look to be the staged action shots, like through the legs passes through, stuff like that.

@ 6:15 This is another clip of the half court setup that I was watching. I'll get into what they had them do here in just a sec.

Here's another video with some footage of the shoot. Skip to :45

Any yet some more footage. Skip to 5:20

As mentioned above, the part I watched live was the half court shoot which can be seen around 1:25 and 6:15 in the first video. Here's a list of what they did..
  • Dribbling (through the legs, behind the back, etc..)
  • Dribble to defend the ball (imagine the hold the balls pics com from Optic rated rookies last year)
  • Dribble then pass
  • Dribble then behind the back pass
  • Shoot, various poses/positions
  • Dunks and layups

So there you go guys. Considering this is where most of your RC photos come from I hope you found this as interesting as I did. Here's hoping they include some of the dunks and more interesting shots on cards this coming season!

A dude I know from my days shooting U of Memphis Tiger basketball is one of the photographers for that shoot. He's the Grizzlies photographer, although I think think technically he's an NBA employee because they fly him to do the playoffs once when the Grizz aren't in it, and he just got back from the NBA Africa game.

You can randomly see him in those videos

i yelled at the Panini NBA guy about the photo choices, especially for Optic and pointed out that Jaylen Browns Optic card has Tatum in the background, so there was no excuse to not have an in-game photo in Optic

Lol, which guy did you yell at? Was it at this event?

I agree though, with the releases that come out later in the season it would be nice if they could use in game for the rookies, especially for stuff like Optic given how late that release seems to comes out. Makes little sense but i've gone over that issue to death at this point so just i'll leave it at that, lol!

He's a good dude - his instagram is joemurphyphoto. He's got a bunch of shots up from that photoshoot from the last day or so.

Oh, at the National? Yeah I hope the use in game shots for rookies in Optic this year and a better mix of photos in general. That would put that release on another level IMO.
