Question question to sketch card collectors

Here's a question to all you hard core sketch card collectors. Which Marvel characters are most sought after? Reason I ask is that I'm working on a set for UD as we speak and I'm finding myself speding too much time trying to figure out who to paint (not for APs, general set).

So instead of raking my brain, I figure I'll ask the community and try and meet demand.

It would be helpful to know which set you're working on so you could possibly tailor the sketch characters to the set, but right now I would say the most popular characters out there in no specific order: Thanos, Deadpool, Wolverine, Thor, Spider-Man, Black Panther.

You would probably be safe going with anyone in Infinity War and X-men characters are always popular.

I'd like to see more Silver Surfer, Galactus sketches but there was that debacle for a while that Marvel didn't have the license for them or something like that so I'm not sure if you're allowed to sketch them or not.

For trading cards in general, I tend to believe these 10 characters are among the most popular characters:

Spider-Man
Wolverine
Deadpool
Punisher
Ghost Rider
Captain America
Hulk
Silver Surfer
Scarlet Witch
Rogue

Then with sketch cards, these characters tend to be pretty popular, too.

Crystal
Gambit
Goblin Queen
Jean Grey/Phoenix
Magik
Mystique
Psylocke
Thanos
Thing
X-23

Agree with all the previous posts about the most popular characters. I would say it would be nice to see different uncommon versions of characters. For example, instead of doing classic yellow and blue wolverine, maybe do bone claws wolverine, or his brown costume. Or we always see classic Green Hulk, but rarely Maestro or Mr. Fix it. Magneto as Xorn would be cool too. And Mr. Sinsiter is a classic villain that conducts science experiments, but you never see science themed sketches with him.

Stuff like that is what catches my eye

Props & Vehicles.
I don’t need anymore static characters.
I need objects or characters holding objects.
& THANKS!

Add these to the list of popular characters:
Venom
Silver Surfer
Iron man
& just about anything with cleavage

As suggested above, cards with multiple characters and items/background tend to do much better too

I think most if not all character sketches are pretty easy to get now. There was a time where 2-3 individuals would go head to head in bidding wars for a particular character. I was guilty of this with Deadpool. Most of us moved on being completionist years ago. I might pick up a Deadpool if it stands out like I got a 2007 MM Cline DP few weeks ago for a fraction of what I would have paid 7 years ago.

I like battle scenes, particularly ones from the MCU movies

Totally agree with this - the market has changed. You definitely paid a significant amount less on that 2007 Marvel Masterpieces Adam Cline ... great addition to your Deadpool collection! He has a different take on the characters. His style isn't for everyone but it's different and it stands out.

Since the Marvel sketch card genre is now just over 20 years old, many of the more popular characters have a multitude of similar static examples out in the market. As mentioned in previous posts, having vehicles, props, backgrounds, and different variations of costumes and/or character incarnations will help make sketch cards stand out.

For example, I have a couple of the Hulk as Mr. Fix It. Instead of the typical savage, rampaging green goliath image of the Hulk, the Mr. Fix It version is grey while wearing a suit and fedora hat. One is an AP with a tommy gun prop, while the other is pack-pulled with the "welcome to Las Vegas" sign in the background.

Multi-character cards are cool, but some character collectors may not care for certain team-ups. Fighting scenes are good, but maybe not showing one characters at a disadvantage. For example, a Dr. Doom collector wouldn't necessarily care for a card depicting Reed Richard having the upper hand. Also, Thing collector probably wouldn't care for a card showing him getting punched in the jaw by the Hulk. But showing them in mid punch may appeal to both collector bases because the outcome can be determined by the viewer.

This could be due to her not appearing often in base cards. I remember see more when Rittenhouse had the marvel license such as the one I pulled below.

I'm hoping she makes a comeback but your exactly right back when they had the license she was in everything and I was able to purchase and trade for her. I haven't noticed her in anything new so now just keeping an eye out for older stuff

Sweet pull by the way you lucky dog

thanks everyone for the great feedback on this thread - some characters are restricted on the UD sets, which is why you guys probably don't see them, I don't really know the reasoning behind it but it is what it is.

Gives me plenty to work with, thanks again!
