Default First time going to a Beach (Destin, FL), looking for tips/advices/suggestions!

Me and some friends (10 total) are going to Destin, FL or nearby surrounding areas this Labor Day weekend. I have never been to the actual beaches and wondered how the beach services work, etiquette, tips, life hacks, or anything really. Also any nice restaurants to go to along with cheap fresh eats, sushi, bars, unique adventures, to avoiding tourists traps, etc...

We will be staying at an AIRBNB spot somewhere near the beach (or according to the description). It may or may not come with golf carts and I'm not sure how useful they are or where you can or cannot take them. I'll be revisiting this thread throughout the year too for any random questions I might think of.

Thanks in advance!

I just got back from Fort Myers on the gulf Coast 2 days ago.

I'll be wearing sunglasses all day, they won't be able to tell if I'm sleeping or drunk

Sand gets hot, really hot. Just because it was cool when you went to play in the water doesn't mean its not scorching hot on the walk back. Found this out the hard way when I had no shoes and had to carry my 70lb dog a decent distance bare foot. Other than that, be smart, stay away from rip tides, and as mentioned wear sunscreen, wear sunscreen, wear sunscreen.

Get in the water and go swimming. Just got back from the beach and hardly anyone gets in. Not sure what they are scared of. Enjoy your trip.

Hopefully there will not be any red tide going on while you all are there. If you see people from the Weather Channel there, you may want to seek immediate shelter.

Go to Mcguire's Irish Pub. (Make a reservation if possible.) Get the shepherd's pie. Thank me.

We go to Seagrove Beach every year which isn't too far from Destin. We usually stay away from Destin because it is extremely busy.

Rent a pontoon boat and go out fishing. Always makes for a good time and gets you away from the crowds.

For a fun, eclectic dining experience, try The Red Bar at Santa Rosa Beach. It's a bit of a drive from Destin (~40 minutes) but well worth it.

White sand beach and emerald water ... as long as the weather cooperates it will be a great trip for you. As others have mentioned, the sand gets scorching hot and you'll need to be applying sunscreen every 30-45 minutes.

Definitely make sure to get a breakfast stop in at the Donut Hole at least once, but avoid Friday-Sunday or you'll be waiting in a very long line.

Wear sunscreen and put more on periodically. Don't skip the top of your feet, you probably wouldn't think to do so, but they'll burn and be a giant pain for awhile after if you miss them

Get some inexpensive swim goggles so that you can see the stingrays swim by your feet. It's fascinating.
