Default Why is PSA 10 so much better than BGS 9.5??

They are both GEM MINT....is it personal preference? Are some PSA cards BGS 9.5? Is it strictly population report or what?

PSA 10 > BGS with a 9 subgrade.

PSA 10 = BGS true gem

PSA 10 < BGS 10

I prefer PSA because there is slightly less plastic between me and the card, so the cards shine brighter IMO.

10 sounds and looks better than 9.5. It's all subjective as well. Some cards I prefer BGS, but I like when the subs are all over 9.5.

Some say that PSA is more strict with their high grades. I can't verify as I don't grade nor follow the trends but maybe that's a reason why?

Yep it seems like a BGS with a 9 subgrade even if there is a 10 subgrade seems less popular

It almost seems like it. I almost get the feeling that 3 9.5 subs and 1 9 sub would = psa 9...

Slight corrections, but otherwise, spot on.

This question has been asked multiple times before and always has the same responses. Some prefer BGS, some prefer PSA. In the end both have their flaws and comes down to personal preference

If you are talking about the actual condition of the card and not the value based on the grade, then this isn't totally true.

More like PSA 10 <= BGS 10.

I think thats part of the appeal.

A PSA 10 is either a BGS 9.5 or BGS 10.

A BGS 9.5 can only be a PSA 10 or PSA 9, it can't be a BGS 10.

its not, just some seem to think it is and will pay more for some reason. psa is in every inferior to bgs in my opinion. especially in case protection, thickness, subgrades, auto grades, etc.
id much rather own a bgs 9.5 then a psa 10.
to each their own.

I agree with AlabamaSlamma's corrections, and TJ I agree with you as usual. PSA 10s are more of a spectrum. Sometimes you get off centered cards that wouldn't grade BGS 9, and sometimes you have a BGS 10. I basically just repeated TJ's point...

BGS slabs give people with OCD nightmares.

I trust a BGS 9.5 with high subs more than a PSA 10.

I've come to prefer PSA slabs over BGS ones because they're thinner and I've had a few BGS ones with the labels falling around.

The "true gem" stuff with BGS grades is annoying to me because PSA is much looser with centering grades than Beckett and you can find examples of both that were overgraded.

Agreed

I used to be a BGS guy, but with MANY BGS 9.5s having "9" subgrades with a fuzzy corner or "9" with dinged edges,
that to me is just NOT a GEM MINT card!!

Most of the time PSA 10s just better represent a Gem Mint card to me unless it is a True Gem BGS 9.5 with all subs 9.5 or better

With that being said MANY PSA 9s appear just as good as MANY BGS 9.5s for a fraction of the price

And refractors POP WAY better in a PSA case than BGS cases, especially Atomic Refractors IMO

Buy the card, not the case its in

And this is coming from a collector with a mixed PC of about 35% BGS / 65% PSA !

PSA has set themselves apart from BGS bc PSA will not grade sheet cards. So any cards that are cut from factory sheets and not Cut by the factory are not graded by psa

One of the most overlooked factors is PSA's set registry is huge.

After countless hours of in-depth studies and calculations, I have come up with the conclusion that 10 is, in fact, greater than 9 and a half.

Sounds like fascinating research... mind sharing your notebooks for peer review?
