Default My rolling Tony Gwynn PC (with pics!)

Hey all -

Growing up in San Diego, Tony Gwynn was my favorite player - just like every other kid.

I've decided to try to focus my PC a bit and have started to collect T.Gwynn cards I always wanted. Have been adding slowly, and will continue to add and update the thread.

First, 1983 rookies:

The PSA 9 auto is very low pop, and the 1/1 is a Topps buyback auto from 2004 Topps Originals Signature Edition. I think I need to add a PSA 10 base rookie card soon.

Wanted to include all my recent purchases to date. It's been just over a year, and I've done what I set out to do. Add a cool new Gwynn card each month, and remain focused on on-card autographs. A bunch of these will go out for grading soon. Will continue to update.

As a fellow Gwynn collector, very nice!!!

Did they only put out the 1/1 on the buy back or did they put some #10, #50, etc versions?

This is awesome. Always one of my favorite players growing up.

Are you looking for anything in particular of Gwynn?

From what I've read about that set, it seems like all Rookie buybacks were 1/1.I haven't been able to find any other auto buybacks from Topps with his '83 card.

I'd really like to add a 2012 Topps framed mini 1983 auto reprint.

Other than that, I think I'm going to focus on certified autos for a bit.

Let me know if you have any you are looking to let with!

Just won the Gwynn on eBay for my 2011 Topps Marquee Museum Collection set. Good luck with your collection!

That's a sweet one! You outbid me for it! It shot up like a rocket at the end. Congrats on the purchase!

Just landed 2 whales this month that I've been looking to get for a long time.
Got a good price on the Century Legends gold, but definitely overpaid on the Archives mini. The Archives mini rookie never pops up though and I absolutely needed it.

The next whales I'm hunting: 2013 Tier One Clear Reprint auto (reprint of 1983 rookie) or one of the two auto batknob cards that were made for him before he passed...

You can see an update on most cards I've purchased in my first post.

3 big additions this week, all #'d /10.
Broke my on-card rule for the .394 auto relic, but I loved the way it looked.
I've noticed the Topps Sterlings are really condition sensitive, so while the grades aren't great (pretty bad), I'm happy to add to my collections.

Been on a bit of a roll lately. Findings lots of good deals on autographed cards to add to my Gwynn PC. Not too hard when there are a lot and I own so few.

Here's the latest:

Nice, I was watching the Tony Gwynn special on MLB network this morning and wondering why Gwynn doesn't get more hobby love. He was a special guy and special player.

Added a few more. I'm getting obsessed with dual auto on-cards.
I've seen a Paul Molitor one /15 I'd love to add...and heard, but never seen online even that there is a Stan Musial dual auto somewhere out there...

Love that they made one with his son:

I know people aren't fans of unlicensed Panini, but I loved this book (my first!) and had to add it to my Gwynn collection:

Added a fourth Sweet Spot to the collection.
I'm trying to be picky based on signature quality as these have a high tendency to fading.
Still need a bunch of parallels of these and any from 2004, 2007, or 2008.

Impressive stuff. Tony was one of the best hitters I have ever seen.

Thanks, I started putting together a ridiculous database of all his autographed cards, just to see where I stack up and make sure I don't buy duplicates as the collection grows.

Essentially have 15% of his autograph cards #'d greater than 50.

Next step is going to be to start tracking if they are sticker autos and create 2 separate lists.

Here's my progress to date:

Yes it's a sticker, which breaks my own "rules"
But the idea of adding a 1/1 brother for my /10 was too good to pass up.

Auto looks MUCH better in person, not sure why it scanned like this.
