Default Justin Verlander

Last Month: 41 IP 1.10 era .68 whip 5 wins 49 strikeouts.
WAR up to 6.1 on the season. Sale is at 6.2. Too bad he starts so slow almost every single year. Would be cool to see him carry the Astros to a WS title. Pretty much unhittable since joining the team. ERA .64 4-0 in 4 starts. 28 ip 11 hits.

He's been a huge add for the Astros. He goes deep in games and seems to get better when other starters start faltering. I hope he can keep it up.

Yep...me too. I hope he kills it for the next few years and then retires only to be inducted into the HOF as a Tiger.

Still skeptical regarding JV as a HoF candidate, but would put him near the top of the list of active pitchers for the Hall if the Astros go all the way and he collects an ALCS or WS MVP

I'll be hopping on the Astros playoff bandwagon to support JV. I'd love to see him get that WS ring. It would be a nice addition to the HOF resume.

It's so much fun watching him dominate. No doubt hall of fame for him, these playoffs cement it along with his regular season accolades.

Still enjoy this. Pretending to be Randy Johnson "i'm here for the lobster". How him and Upton met.

This one's alright too.

I decided to compare him to Schilling, since they're similar.. especially with the postseason Verlander's having. Know what? They have the same EXACT career ERA - 3.46.

Verlander gets them over the hump this year that will be a huge boost to his HOF creds

Umm, a couple good weeks in the playoffs doesn't even come close to Schilling's dominant five years (12 diff series)in the playoffs (11-2, 2.23 ERA and one of those losses was pitching on one leg) and 3 rings.

True, but adjust Verlander's ERA for pitching his entire career in the AL, vs. Schilling the majority in the NL, and Verlander's case looks a lot better.

What if Topps messed up and his next relic card is his fiance's lingerie? I'd probably be ok with this mix up...how about you? Hana

Agreed. Those last two starts were amazing. As a lifelong Tigers fan I am really glad to see him pitching well in the Postseason and hopefully the WS.

In terms of Verlander vs Schilling for the HOF, Verlander is pretty charming with the media, while Schilling excoriates--often in super offensive fashion--anyone who isn't in lockstep with his narrow and often xenophobic worldview. I understand the perspective that only numbers should factor into HOF decision making, but I just don't think that's the reality for an influential chunk of voters.

Schilling might well be in there already, based in large part on his crazy good postseason performances, if he wasn't such a vile jerk to and about so many people in recent years.

Verlander doesn't have a personality that torpedos the persuasiveness of his stats, so is that much farther ahead in his chances of getting in someday. (Not to say he necessarily ever will. Certainly would have helped him to get that additional Cy Young last year.)

But first, the HOF voters are going to have to arrive at some more settled baselines for inducting pitchers from the post-300 win era.

Chad

Curt Schilling pitched like 5-10 more years, and 1000 more innings. He also pitched in a completely different generation. His career as a "good" pitcher is essentially the same time Barry Bonds was in SF.

Verlander is almost 35 years old and needs five full seasons of really good baseball to catch Schilling at like 4 WAR a pop. To give you context, this year was essentially a four win season with all of the ups and downs.

Playoff innings are pretty similar, but Curt's been better relative to the league and generation.

There isn't a statistical argument you could make for Verlander over Schilling at this point that's based on fact.

Schilling was a post season beast.

He just had too many injuries. Basically lost half of 4 seasons banking 8 wins combined with his nutty personality...

Still... 3 rings, the bloody sock, Boston resurgence.

He's definite HOF talent, with HOF post season glory... even if the numbers don't support induction.
