Question Alright Blowout, put your detective hats on. This is an absolute "WTF".

Here is a real head scratcher that I hope someone can shed some light on.

A couple years ago, I picked up a 97-98 Fleer Ultra Gold Medallion Penny Hardaway in a lot at a card show. When I got home and had a chance to really look at the cards, I noticed that this card had a faint imprint of some kind on the top right corner of the front of the card. I couldn't tell what it was but I knew it wasn't supposed to be there. I looked at it under different lighting and under a magnifying glass and I determined that it was none other than... An Arby's logo? Haha, so I'm thinking "Wow, that is really bizarre. How the hell does that happen?" I chalked it up as totally weird and something that I do not and likely will not ever have an explanation for. The card went into my box of Penny commons and I never really thought about it again... Until now.

Fast forward to a couple weeks ago. I'm at another card show and thumbing through bargain boxes all day like I always do at shows. I picked out a ton of cards that day and a 97-98 Penny Gold Medallion was one of them. What's funny is that when I saw it, I thought "Nice, finally found a replacement for my Arby's SP variation" I didn't inspect the card at the show because it was just so cheap; I glanced at it and it was quickly added to my stack. Well I'm looking over the cards a couple days later and to my total and utter amazement... there it is - the faint imprint of an Arby's logo in the exact same spot as my other copy! What the f*** right?? So naturally, I go to COMC to look at other copies of the card. THEY ALL HAVE IT. And no other card that I've seen from the same set has it.

https://www.comc.com/Cards/Basketbal...rdaway/1480874

So why does every 97-98 Fleer Ultra Gold Medallion Anfernee Hardaway have the faint imprint of an Arby's logo in the top right corner?

WHY?

Hold that thought, this picture makes it look like it's on the upper wall of the arena, above the seats.

Haha wow. In my defense, the logo really does appear to be a physical mark on the surface of the gold medallion effect. It's obvious on the base version that it's a part of the photograph. I need to lay off the booze. Don't mind me, guys. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Haha...I appreciate the effort put into this thread. What's obvious to some is not obvious to others and vice versa. Doesn't hurt to ask.

Yes, these were given out as a promotional item in 1997 from participating Arby's locations. If the Magic scored over 100 points anytime in December you could go in the next day and receive this card with any combo meal purchase. Only 10,000 copies were produced.

Or it could just be advertising in the arena.

First thing I thought of too after reading the first post... advertising in the background.

I think 97 Upper Deck came out with an Arbys subset:

We can keep this thread alive for all the mysterious 97-98 Ultra cards haha

Not sure if I should make a new thread or not, but what is up with this card? While it is embossed, it lacks the refractor like finish, but just has that little strip of sparkly gold. Wonder if it was meant to be a Gold, but got screwed up while printing...

A little strip of gold foil must have gotten loose and pressed into the card.

Yea, but even the standard silver holofoil is absent.

Yeah, I traded for it a few years ago and when I got it I was like what the hell is this? Not shiny. Only thing that shines is the random gold line that goes all over the place haha
