The responsibilities of a Head Coach are so wildly different from anything else that it's almost impossible to make any kind of judgment right after the hiring, especially when it involves a coordinator. The fact that we judge anyway pretty much explains why the Peter Principle is a thing.

If you look at just about every Super Bowl winning head coach in recent memory, they were far from being "sexy" hires at the time. Belichick, Carroll and Coughlin were fired from previous NFL head coaching gigs. Mike McCarthy had just coordinated one of the worst offenses of the 2000s. Mike Tomlin was extremely young and had one year of coordinating experience. John Harbaugh was a special teams coach. Meanwhile, how often did the latest hot young coordinator actually continue to have success as a head coach?

Most do not seem very young, but considering the job, one could likely say Jason Garrett was the last one.

This will be garrett's 2nd trip to the playoffs in 7 years so It's debatable if that can be considered "continued success".

I don't see the point of them hiring a defensive coach.

I think if the Falcons lost in the first week they would have hired shanny Jr. Kind of surprised with this pick but as long as he can bring the locker room together and call more than 4 plays he will be a major upgrade over kubiak

Not a Cowboys fan so you won't see me argue that point, but Dallas has had a respectable win-loss record. So if you are that strict to Birdlaws wording, considering only playoffs as success, that the coach be young, and was a coordinator, I guess none other then Tomlin. However, only a few coaches would even qualify for consideration.

I have never heard of Vance Joseph, but I do know Kyle Shanahan, the runner-up for the job, and I would take anyone over any of the Shanahans.

Wade Phillips apparently going to the Rams? Broncos could be in for a rough year or two.
