Just popped. Was hoping for a 10 but will take the 9. I've been accumulating a lot of Shohei year one Dodger cards lately as I think they will see a lot of appreciation.

Hey guys - first off, I don't know why the link doesn't work! Inserted it as a link? So I was checking out this card on Ebay. It's a PSA 10, but has a small white dot on the back of one of the corners (imperfection). Any thoughts, with seller asking for 3K? thanks!! Please see item number below!

Love the image used for 2024 #500, not a huge fan of the chrome image. Any rhyme or reason as to when/why Topps decides to use different images for flagship vs chrome? 2019 was like this for Shohei too with different image for chrome vs flagship

PSA is consistently inconsistent.

They caught the grader on a good day perhaps.

PSA has a longstanding history of being "Please Submit Again" where if you don't like the grade you can basically resubmit it until you get a better grade (of course you have to be willing to continually pay for that chance).

It's a human looking at a card for 1-3 seconds and making a judgement.

PSA is the best-in-class, but they are no where near perfect.

I like the chrome image better only because it's actually from 2024 and I like that it's a new image. Helps with not having repetition because Sapphire is the same image as #500.

#500 looks like it's from 2023 and just Photoshopped because he doesn't have his black arm sleeve. And YES, I know plenty of cards are Photoshopped when players go to new teams or Ohtani rookies for example.

i would guess its because they had the time to use an image of him in actual Dodgers gear (his S2 is photoshopped)

A card like this should do well even in a 9. True golds are top tier pedigree and there are only 50 true gold flagship chrome's available every year.

Imagine if Jordan was traded to the Bulls mid career and had a 1st year Bulls Uniform Gold Refractor.

Card would be bananas. Nice pickup!

Cards like this are why I mostly stick to PSA 9s and 8s. If that corner bugs you, I'd suggest holding out until you find a PSA 9 that may be "undergraded" with sharper back corners than this example. You'll probably save your self a ton of money going that route as well.

3k is a ton. To put it in perspective a 9 recently sold for under 1k

Will Ohtani cards in a Dodgers uniform sell for a premium in the long term? I am basically a RC card collector (with a few 2nd year RC cup cards). I assume in the next 10 year Topps is going to print a gazillion Ohtani cards and sets in a Dodgers uniform (especially as he has an exclusive contract with topps).

Are there any examples of a player of his caliber switching teams and those cards with the new team holding a premium (did this happen with LeBron James)?

I think they will. If you look at Lebron James, you do see a premium in his rare cards in a Laker uniform (Gold, black, etc). Part of what helps is this historic season he has just had and the fact it was done in a Dodger uniform. The more he accomplishes as a Dodger and more memorable moments he provides fans, the more people will want significant cards of him from his year one Dodger days. His rookies will always be the top cards to get, but I think this years cards can come in second.

I was curious about this too. I might pick up a first year Dodger auto just because it will be a little different from the thousands of other non rookie autos

This is essentially what I'm saying. Ohtani rookies will rule for sure, but if you are looking for the next best year of Ohtani cards to get, my guess is this years Dodger cards. They had been underrated for a bit, but not as much. Just as an example I was able to purchase Chrome golds for $400-$500 about 45 days ago, now they are more than double that which is a greater increase than most of his rookies with the 50/50 achievement. Just because they were so underrated

As a team collector of Mariners cards, I can tell you there isn't a single card in my Mariners binder with the player wearing another team's jersey.

I don't know how many other team collectors are like me but I'm sure a good portion are.

I'd put the hierarchy of Ohtani cards in this order: Rookies > 2019 rookie cup > 2024+ Dodgers, 2020-2023 Angels.

I've also really started to grow fond of his BBM cards from his NBP days but I'm not sure where I'd rank them. Likely either equal to or slightly better than his 2019 rookie cup issues.

Agree with Qubits, but don't sleep on the rare parallels from cult following sets like Flashbacks or Heritage (throwbacks). Those are my PC favorites and I feel they will age well even in an angels uni .

Keep in mind, I don't even follow my own advice if I think the image is cool enough. This is still my favorite flagship image of Shohei and I'm up to 3 binder pages full of various parallels of it including a couple dupes and will continue to buy every copy I see at a reasonable price at card shows:
