I would assume just to keep pop low, PSA would almost certainly not give you a PSA 8, unless if it's an absolute blazer. If it's a solid card, a PSA 7 would be amazing and definitely worth a few thousand $$. I'm assuming since you bought it back in the days, you didn't pay more than a few thousand, if that. A PSA 7 means you make out like a bandit.
You’re out of touch with the market a PSA 7 worth a few thousand? There’s one at Goldin it’s sitting at 30k I expect 35-40k final hammer.

Thanks. BGS wasn’t an option back then. They didn’t grade Star basketball at the time. I bought it already graded and yes I don’t have much in it. The cost of grading will be more than I paid for the card. I’ll keep you posted. If I get lucky I will sell to maximize profit and then buy a BGS copy and pocket the rest. I always want to have a Star 101 in my collection. I sent in a few of the other Star Bulls commons under the $18 special with varying centering. What an iconic set.

I understand exactly how you feel. I had my 3 Jordan Star cards graded by CSA before Beckett was even in business. CSA was a Canadian grading company. I’m 100% sure that would grade, not trimmed or short but I would crack and submit before I sent them in. CSA graded them 9, 8, 8. I’ll try to post pictures later and see what members think. They do look amazing in the blue gasket though.

I had a CSA 8 101 same story didn’t know about BGS at the time. Submitted it raw. Side note the blue plastic border inside the case had a jagged piece of plastic sticking up and damaged the edge of the card! I didn’t do anything about it I should have. This was 20 years ago. Since then I sold it way to early about 5 years ago for only around $5,000.

I know what they go for. I meant the cost of the grading to PSA.

Yeah, my memory is off with BGS's timeframe. And I guess that explains WHY all my Star cards were in GAI holders back in the days.

Ok,the way you worded it seemed like you were referring to the cost of a PSA 7.

Yes I have the Gatorade and Miller Lite Jordan’s in CSA holders from when they were the only option. They do look good in the old blue slabs.

I had a BGS 9.5 of one of the 86 versions years ago. It didn't belong in that case though. Had a dented corner.

I've always liked the star cards. Was the affordable option to the fleer before 2020.

A PSA 7 sold for 28K in the same auction. These will drop more in the coming months. We have seen this with many other cards as well, haven't we? It is tough to manipulate the price in a declining market.

I think most of us expected it. Aside from one sports card investor of note, that is.

A PSA 8 sold for 115K on Aug 6th at Goldin. Last night sale was 84K. A nice ~30% drop in two weeks. I would not be surprised if it drops another 30-40% to 50K level in a few months.

It may, but if no additional PSA 8's pop in the next few months, I expect it to creep up a little. I think collectors/investors are staying on the sidelines waiting to see how high the PSA 8 pop goes. If it flatlines and all of the new submissions are PSA 7.5's and lower, that $84k sale may be a steal. If five new copies get added to the PSA 8 population report, $50k would be a reasonable price.

SCI reminds me of that guy from "A Bronx Tale" that was always bad luck.

Put him in the bathroom while they were betting so their money didn't touch, ripped up their tickets when they found out he bet on the same horse...

If SCI says it's good, go in the opposite direction ASAP

On a different note, I remember someone here was pumping Brady Champ Ticket last year saying it is a $3-5 million dollar card. A BGS 8.5/10 sold for $1.2 million last night at PWCC, which is a ~50% drop from Feb 2022 when a BGS 8.5/10 sold for $2.3 million. A Champ Ticket BGS 8.5 with an Auto 9, the first Champ Ticket to hit the market after Brady won his 7th ring sold for $2.25 million in Apr 2021 because of the hype and manipulation. The exact same card sold for $1.2 million in Jan 2022. Just because one or two people paid stupid prices because of FOMO or with an intent to manipulate, it does not set a benchmark. Anyways, what makes you think 84K sale might be a steal if the pop remains low and the prices might creep up a little? Do you believe there are many collectors out there that are looking to spend six figures on a Jordan Star PSA 8? The reason I am asking is because few were saying the same thing about Jordan 86F PSA 10 as well; i.e; there are more than 300 high end Jordan collectors out there who don't mind paying high six figures for a PSA 10.

If you are hardcore Jordan collector and have 10K to spend, what would be the first card you would go after? ICONIC

If you are a hardcore Jordan collector and money is not an issue, what would be the first card you would go after? GRAIL

EDIT: Here is SCI calling a bottom in sports cards market a year ago (July 2021)

$50K seems appropriate. If PSA grades a few 9s, we can expect the 8s to drop even more.

On August 8th I posted the pop chart snapshot and there were 4 PSA 8's out there. Now, 11 days later another one was added, making 5 total. I'm no expert but I expect the PSA 8 pop to grow quite a bit. I look forward to revisit this a year from now.

One thing to remember is no matter how much people want to pump Brady as some football god, he's no Jordan. The last year or so have made it feel like he's on the same level, but it's unsustainable. I expect the Brady market to continue to fall hard.

Why do I believe the Star 101 at $84k may have been a steal? Unlike the 300+ collectors you need to keep the Fleer 57 afloat, you'll need a fraction of those people to sustain Star prices. I can't see the PSA 8 pop topping 50 when it's all said and done. Add to that there most likely will only be 5-10 copies at 8.5/9, and you'll have hardcore collectors only being able to choose from ~60 copies. Oh, and it's his actual rookie card. That's key. IMO, the Fleer 57 isn't like the '52 Mantle, where it's so iconic it doesn't matter that it's not his true rookie.

To answer the bolded, if I have $10k to spend, I'd wait for the best-looking PSA 4 Star to pop and buy that, although I think those stay above $10k.

Money being no object? Star 101 PSA 9. Two or three copies may reach that level. Get one whenever you have a chance.

I agree. I don’t think there will be any 9’s unless some shenanigans are going on. I can see this card in PSA 8 being the card to own in the future.

.
What makes you believe (other than PSA set registry) that hardcore collectors will only go after PSA 8 for six figures when there are 250 BGS 8.5's that are currently selling for less than 35K? If that was the case, the PSA 8 price should not have dropped from 115K to 84K within two weeks.

For Brady, the general consensus Grail card is Champ Ticket and for Lebron, it's his exquisite RPA. The general consensus iconic card (desirable and most traded) for Lebron is his 2003 TC. For Jordan, the Star is not the consensus grail card. It's not even considered iconic by many. I used to own one and never considered it as iconic. I can purchase one today and even if I owned one, I would not consider it as iconic or grail card.

So you're saying there will definitely be some 9s

If the hobby really needs a boost in a few years a 10 will surface.

If money is no issue, I'd much rather have a card that you can not find again, not by pop count but by actual count. An MJ logoman auto or something of that sort.

Everyone has their own personal "grails" which is what makes collecting fun. But if it's a hobby grail, it's something only one can have even if others have the money to afford it.
