I bought one blindly off of here assuming it was the black omission card it wasn't. Was stoked to get the variation.
Mine was the first I saw or heard of it, since then I have been tracking them on here, fb, & ebay.. Thus far I have seen a total of 8 pop up.
These were also the last card in the pack just like the 'hit' cards...
I assume that this is Topps clever way of "accidentally" releasing a rare wagner into the set just like the original...
I was thinking prob about 10 of them out there but it could be 15 or so... I don't think they would be overlooked unless someone just bought a single pack and no idea about the base/famous wagner...

I finally got the last of my S2.

Nothing exciting to report. I got the Bellinger and Soler base i needed to finish my second base set, and a Beiber Polar. (Polar Beiber?). Nothing numbered. No omissions, No variant Honus...couple of unremarkable names in sweet cap and sovereign.

Super pleased the run dropped again for S3.

Divided by 50 = SP /1,129

Sweet Caporal backs are 1:3 packs, so that's 9,408 divided by 50 = SP /188

Sovereign backs are 1:6 packs, so that's 4,704 divided by 50 = SP /94

Polar Bear backs are NOT IN THIS SERIES???

Carolina Brights backs are Wave 3 exclusive and 1:20 packs so that's 1,411 divided by 50 = SP /28

Old Mill backs are 1:30 packs so that's 940.8333 divided by 50 = 18.817 (So we're calling that one SP /19

Cycle backs are serial numbered /25 so they should fall about 1:23 packs

American Beauty backs are serial numbered /10 so they should fall about 1:57 packs

Ty Cobb backs are 1 of 1's so they should fall 1:565 packs

My only question now is...

My only question is on the Piedmont backs. I haven't opened any so far but will be opening Wave 3...

Is there truly 2 piedmonts per pack? Does one of the other variants replace one piedmont in the pack? If so, wouldn't you need to take the total number of "other parallels" and subtract that from the piedmont number?

I've heard of certain packs having 11 cards. I'd assume that's mostly auto packs, but maybe I'm wrong. I'm asking more than I'm telling lol

If you haven't figured out yet, they're trying to mimic some portions of the original set and how it was released in waves back in 1909, 1910, and 1911. Originally 150 card series, 350 card series, 460 card series, etc with different backs going in and out during the set.

my understanding was the variant actually replaces a base rather than a piedmont, and thus you subtract from the base number rather than the piedmont number. but i might be misremembering this

The unnumbered variants replace a base card. The numbered cards are an additional card usually, I think the auto is as well.

This makes sense. Thank you. So, the unnumbered variants should still be subtracted from the base count in the calculations. That makes a lot more sense and why Topps would say 2 per pack on the piedmonts.

I just pulled one the other day, it was in the very back, last card after the variation backs. I didn't see this in the original listing and was quite shocked at the eBay price. There's at least 6 in existence now (5 on ebay atm, +1 in my hand).

well, rare is in the eye of the beholder...a card that Topps doesn't even acknowledge & that only has 9 "known" cards seems kinda rare/special to me.
