I have some big cards I'm sitting on and I'm contemplating if I should move them or not. I've been in the hobby for decades and have NEVER seen values explode like they have these past 2 years. Some of these ultra high end cards have gone parabolic and it's sometime hard to fathom if all of this is sustainable.

I wanted to diversify elsewhere. I have been selling low to mid end baseball, basketball and football since Jan. I will hold on to the Lebron Exquisite RPA, Brady Champ Ticket, Jordan PMG Red, Ali Hemmets Journal, Mantle 1952 Topps and few others for long term.

The Lebron BC Gold Refractor used to be mine. I sold it to him too soon after I acquired the TC Gold. Probably left $250K on the table on that one

Would you consider funneling the Gold proceeds into a higher grade RPA? Tough call because your 8.5 has one of the better patches.

Thank you. I will definitely not use the funds to purchase another Lebron especially a second RPA. It defeats the whole purpose of not wanting to have too much exposure to cards of one player, which is why I am selling the TC Gold

Essentially, are you looking to reduce your individual card exposure or dollar exposure to Lebron?

Ah, gotcha. It is tough to find a RPA/23. Moreover it would cost me ~3.5 million for a BGS 8.5 grade. My plan is to limit my exposure to $1.5 to 2 million for any given player, i.e; dollar exposure. I am currently doing that with Brady cards as well. I will likely invest the funds in stock market during the next correction.

I know we all have different views on the hobby and how to price cards and mine are outside the norm.

Trying to compare players and across sets works to a point, but it falls short when you’re talking about guys who actually just want to collect to collect.

The Lebron Chrome Rookie is completely watered down, in relation to Curry, by the fact that Lebron has:

-More Chrome cards in total to choose from
-More Chrome parallels to choose from
-More Overall rookie cards to choose from
-More High-End rookie cards to choose from

Steph, just due to random circumstances that occurred his rookie season, has basically 1510 total Chrome cards across all parallels to choose from. His only other “High-End” meaningful card is the NT RPA.

He has other interesting things, Court Kings Autos & Contenders Autos, but they’re not really high-end cards. Hell, I’d argue the only reason his College Exquisite cards get the prices they do is because he has such a piss poor card catalog.

I don’t think, given the actual card circumstances above, it’s crazy that Lebron’s Chrome Gold rookie didn’t double Steph. I’d even bet that in the future the Curry Gold Chrome will outsell the Lebron, regardless of basketball accomplishments and/or personalities post career.

Steph just does not have the available supply of cards, nor does he have the high end type of cards that bring in big money, that Lebron does. I’m certain there’s an inefficiency because people are so used to trying to compare players/sets when formulating what to bid, and missing the biggest piece of the puzzle that I laid out above.

I’m also a crazy person.

Thanks. I messaged him on Insta and waiting for his reply. If it is him, I might have left some money on the table. I was debating between private sale vs auction house vs fractional share route with me retaining some equity in it. It is a gamble and auctions have given me better results overall in the past compared to private sale. There were at least two who were interested in mine and I thought auction would fetch better results if there is a bidding war between few. Perhaps one of them was able to acquire one in a private sale, which eliminates one potential buyer. One of them was also looking for a Brady Champ Ticket at that time (Sep 2021) and ended up acquiring one later. I am still happy with the sale price

EDIT: I was almost going to sell mine in October 2020 for 275K in a private sale after the Lakers won the championship. Glad I held onto it for one more year.

The sale last night is over $100k less than the last sale, which was private in 2021 (as referenced by Pram). That alone is very surprising to me.

I do find it interesting how some of these sales shake out and the bidders who bid/don’t bid.

I’m not buying cards in your range, but there are cards the go off all the time that I can’t bid what I’d like to due to a variety of circumstances.

There’s a card last night that, under the proper circumstances, I’d have paid close to double the ending price. Unfortunately, because there are so many good cards listed for auction and my pockets aren’t endless, I had to let it go and the seller left a good chunk on the table.

With better timing (that can’t be foreseen) or even just shopping it around for a bit and having good people skills, the seller could have netted double.

Mike Novaratz mentioned he paid little more than a million for his quad gem. I heard he acquired it in Feb 2021, which was the peak in sports cards market. Perhaps he slightly overpaid for his. It is tough to time the market perfectly.

Agree. When there is finite money and too many choices (cards), some cards underperform.
