While all conventional wisdom says Bowman RCs don't do squat, I think the Ohtani will be a major exception.

This is why, if I had to invest $1K in Ohtani, I would try to find a deal on one of these two cards. It always comes full circle in the hobby.

Great to see Shohei back in the lineup today unlike in the past where he would usually sit games before/after pitching

Appetizer for today's game -
Matty V and Jose Mota having fun with Shohei's unreal game yesterday!
These guys have great chemistry.

Seems obvious that the action variation isn’t a rookie card but because its harder to find, that rookie year issue means a little bit more than the Heritage High Number base, which is his rookie card.

There's no concrete rule that SP or variations cannot be a rookie card. People come up with these mythical ideas and start using them as fact. By that definition, Acuna 698 Bat Down and Vlad NNO are not real RCs. I'm pretty sure nobody cares that they are SP/variations. They are the cards to have with no derivatives.

Also, in heritage "Action" is a misnomer. Half or more of the rookie cards are not even action shots. It's pretty much serves a purpose as a SP.

Anyway, there's no right/wrong opinion. Buy what you like, but the card police/illuminati setting the rules does not exist.

Spot on. I am 180 degrees opposed to the previous opinion about the Heritage low Action not being his "true" Heritage RC.

I agree. I remember buying boatloads of Heritage low trying to land that card. Then doing the same with Bowman. His “RC” from those sets still carry more weight and value for me personally than 150, 700, US1 or HHN. Collecting trends change and values shift in time. It will be interesting to see what the market prefers 10yrs+ from now.

I haven’t looked up Ohtani’s Team Set card in quite some time. I am pleasantly surprised to see where the graded cards are priced!

I believe this is still a Pop 1.

What does “True” mean? Seems like BO forums are the ones changing the rules to fit desired RC labels.
The Action is a variation... variation of the RC that is apart of the standard checklist. So the variation by nature is second to the non-variation. Saying a card is a true RC doesn’t make it so. But at the end of the day it’s about what you like right? So if the action is what you like, cool.

So does it need to fully clear the yellow line for a HR?

Would you guys consider this similar to Acuna bat down? I don’t own any of those cards but I was surprised that I don’t see many of them on eBay. Is that card really rare?

Not really, Acuna was a SP with about a ~3K print run and the Ohtani US1 is a SSP with PR of ~260.

Here's where it gets confusing - Ohtani has 2 flagship SPs (S2 with bat, Update warm up shirt) and 3 flagship SSPs (S2 hand on helmet, Update US1 pitching and batting). In my opinion, the most preferable one is the S2 hand on helmet. It is the first SSP and in my opinion, the best looking, and the most condition sensitive by pop report.

Hope that helps. Topps milked Ohtani so it's hard to track sometimes.
