So glad I scooped up a few cards this past offseason. I didn't get in "early" but I'd wager the values on what I bought over the winter has doubled.

I guess my question was more along the lines...is this the tip of the iceberg for Ohtani's popularity and cards? In 5 years or so (assuming Ohtani stays healthy and plays to his current level) will Ohtani's card values be worth more than Trout. I feel like Ohtani RC autos will be worth more than Trout one day. Heck, at this point his flagship RC could become a $50 card one day.

what "helps" Trout is the overall lack of number of Rookie Cards made

Ohtani has many many options.

as far as Ohtani's "value" in 5 years? it will be much more than it is now.

He will probably go down as Griffey like popularity when he retires, due to being famous all over the world

I agree with TBP's assessment below on sheer number of RCs for each. But to answer your question, I think it ultimately depends on caliber of play. If Ohtani plays like this for the rest of THIS season, his cards are going higher. If he plays like this for the next 2-3 seasons, you're going to have lulls but they'll go higher. I'm of the belief that his cards will peak after retirement because I'm of the belief that we'll never see a 2-way player that excels at both - at least not in the near future and probably not in the next couple decades at least.

What he's done is largely unprecendented and highly unlikely to be repeated. True unicorn.

I have no opinion on what you should do about cracking and sending to PSA. I am curious...I know you sold that card in the past, and I know you acquired that one. Did you end up having to pay more for this one than the one you sold.

Really could hinge on what he does in fa. Most assume he's going to the dodgers where he will get a way bigger spotlight. I don't see him staying with angels but who knows.

I don't know if it's more of how embarrassing the Rangers are or how good Ohtani is. But he just scored from 2nd on a fielder's choice to 2nd. They're about to mess around and lose again to these Angels.
