I feel that the hobby is filled with a new crowd that wants a quick payday. For this reason, I believe we will see a stall in most vets as they are seen as the boring blue chips of the market. I'm not saying they are not good buys, but I think the last untapped market is the prospect market and the gamblers from football/basketball are going to come flooding in trying to find the next Soto.

How many 2020 base prospect cards are selling for more than $100/each? A ton. A Soto home run won't double his prices, but apparently a Bobby Witt Jr. home run will send his prices soaring even though they are already high.

It swings all over the place now. NBA cards see heavy swings between ultra modern rookies and established stars. Not long ago we saw 2019 LeBron base Prizm PSA 10’s near $1,000. Then people drove up Jordan/Kobe/Shaq. Then people started swinging to Soto/Tatis—then Griffey, then back to Luka/Zion—Some football peppered in there. It’s all over the place with everything up and down but overall up.

I flipped through my mid-2000’s Bowman Chrome sets the other day and held a moment of silence for all the money lost stashing those prospects. Actually got excited to see Ian Kinsler—the biggest of a mere few names I recognized. Never again!

But I believe it’s the burn of the prospect game that drives people to the established stars eventually.

Number to the left was the BA top 100 ranking at the time. I only did through May. These were true gem prices. Andujar was an outlier because he had very few 10 autos, and they came at a huge premium.

Unfortunately, very few prospects are worth holding long term. Which is why most people fail at it. You need to stay on top of it and dump the guys the moment it looks like they won’t make it. And then you have to decide whether to hold or sell while they’re hot for the ones that do make it. Personally, I find the challenge fun. But I’m awful at it.

Yeah they will also sell all the rolexes they bought, and stocks, and graded comics, and ammo and draw down on their savings. I know 4 people that flip in my town. (13k people) pre covid there was 3. Could Buy some disney and southwest as a hedge against a black swam soto price dip event.

I’m kinda of the opposite opinion, that prospect prices will stall and blue chips will stay hot.
How much new money is going to want to pay attention to MiLB? If it’s not on sportscenter, are they really going to care?
