Not only did Rose not manage to win when he didn't bet on the Reds. John Dowd had evidence that Rose did bet against the Reds, but he wasn't given time to fully investigate.

The Washington D.C.-based lawyer revealed yesterday that if the investigation would have continued a little longer it would have shown the all-time hit leader not only bet on Reds’ games, but actually bet against the team he was managing.

However, Dowd said he had reliable evidence that Rose indeed bet against his team and was “close” to being able to officially put it into his report, but was prevented by the need to get the report done quickly.

In any case, Dowd said Rose did not bet on the Reds whenever two pitchers, including Mario Soto, started, which “sent a message through the gambling community that the Reds can’t win” on those days.

At this point does it really matter? Everyone who cares to know anything about baseball knows he has the most hits of all-time (a record which will never be broken most likely) and that he was a HOF level player. And like someone else mentioned it’s not like he’s been completely shut out of Cooperstown; he’s recognized there. So it’s not like you’re missing out on your Pete Rose fix if you decide to visit.

Agree with this point completely. Same with all of the steroid guys that have so far been denied entry. There stats and records are everywhere. They don't need a plaque to be in the Hall of Fame.

Again, I don't get it. Like, I understand that in life, not all your friends are heroes are going to have the same beliefs are you. But I cannot understand anyone who wants to die on the Pete Rose hill. He is such a terrible person.

This sums up Rose: When this was all going down, the investigators knew that they were going to get Rose on betting and tax evasion. He was screwed. But Giamatti was willing to put baseballs one Golden Rule, and the integrity of the game, on the shelf to protect Rose. And Dowd and the FBI was willing to play along!

It was fairly common knowledge back then that Giamatti was open to a suspension for Rose if the Reds manager would admit to gambling on baseball and enter treatment for his gambling addiction.

Yet, according to Dowd, it went further than that. Dowd now says he and Giamatti worked with federal prosecutors and even the FBI to work out a deal that any pending charges for tax evasion against Rose would be dropped if he came clean.

In addition, FBI agents worked behind the scenes to ensure that Rose's gambling debts with the New Jersey loan sharks and bookies that numbered in the hundreds of thousands would be forgiven, Dowd now says.

Yet Rose is such a moron he still screwed it up. He has zero people to blame for this but himself.

Hell, if you want to argue that MLB should show some compassion, tell that to Rose. I am 110% sure that if he just would have played along and showed some remorse in the 1990's and early 2000's, he would be back. But nope!

At the time the ban agreement was announced, then-Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti said: "The burden is entirely on Mr. Rose to reconfigure his life in a way he deems appropriate."

Manfred said in his letter to Rose that the hits king has failed to meet that burden.

"In short, Mr. Rose has not presented credible evidence of a reconfigured life either by an honest acceptance by him of his wrongdoing, so clearly established in the Dowd Report, or by a rigorous, self-aware and sustained program of avoidance by him of all the circumstances that led to his permanent in eligibility in 1989," Manfred wrote.

But hey, since i am now upset just thinking about this, let me take a second to say how trashy it is that baseball--despite the #%@# Golden Rule that you don't bet on baseball--decided to go all in with these new gambling partnerships. THAT looks great.

The Hall Of Fame has different standards for different sets of groups. Thank goodness our society has not grouped up and created this circus. If I knew it was happening in our society, I would utilize its greatest strength to have it be its greatest weakness. Kind of like discussing WAR, Wins Above Replacement not placing a value on the ability to be available. After all, isn't the greatest ability availability?

The HALL needs to change because they set a standard that they broke by allowing 3 cheaters "Colluders / Defrauders" into the HOF. Be equal with forgiveness or don't allow certain groups a free pass.

A longtime friend of mine's mother gave birth to him at 17. His biological father (22 at the time he was born), started a successful company within a few years. My friend and his siblings were raised in our picturesque southern CA community, in their parents' $2-million home.

Turns out those young mothers / independent young women don't turn out to be welfare mongering street walkers, in line with your crackpot self-righteous blathering.

Can someone refresh my memory because I just don't remember the details on this...why did he "agree" to that? MLB didn't need his agreement to ban him. I mean, usually when there is a punishment and you "agree" to it, it is a plea bargain of some kind for a punishment, but a lesser punishment than what was possible.

Here, he got the worst possible punishment anyway. It's like an accused murderer "agreeing" to a death penalty sentence. What was in it for Rose to agree to a lifetime ban?
