Although I imagine he everntually ends up as OF/1B/DH in a few years regardless of where he is playing. Dodgers and Padres are in Southern California and offer a much better chance at winning. New ownership means nothing. We don't know who the owners will be or how they'll run the team. To me that is more of a negative since it's a big unknown. Irvine has the largest Japanese population in OC and Irvine was 88th highest Japense population in the US from last census data. There are actually several cities in NY and NJ with higher Japanese population then Irvine or anyplace in OC. Hawaii has most of the top Japanese populated cities in US and after that they are all cities in LA County. NL didn't have DH when he came to US but now he can go to the Dodgers and be able to DH when he isn't pitching. Also I've never heard anyone describe Anaheim or OC as paradise.
Can you read? Those teams were in a bidding war...why didn't he pick another team? The Angels were the only team who guaranteed him the opportunity to hit and pitch.

Padres and Dodgers? Lol. Where are they going to find that kind of money? Take a peek at their current payroll and roster.

The Japanese bit is more important than you are making it out to be...I'm from Irvine so certainly aware of it. It's not like NYC is hurting for good Japanese restaurants or anything like that, but undoubtedly California has more Japanese cultural experiences than New York or freaking New Jersey.

Anaheim is not paradise. It's a working class city about 20 minutes from the beach. You've never heard anyone refer to Orange County as paradise? You live like an hour away -- never been to Newport Beach or Dana Point? Ever hear of Laguna Beach?

You think someone is going to pony up billions for the Angels to not spend, not compete, and not keep the best player in baseball (on the same team as the other best player in baseball).

You must follow cards; not baseball.

15th Street in NB was my paradise growing up in the SGV...no argument from me on that. Just spent a few days over at The Montage in LB again and it was stellar.

Of course, I also love me some Yosemite and Sequoia/Kings Canyon.

Ocean and mountains...only two things I miss from back home.

OK pal. I've been following baseball for about 40 years. Obviously you are a homer who only will accept one answer. Typical California mindset where you're opinion is the only one that counts. If Ohtani loves the OC so much why is he back in Japan in the off season. You overestimate the worth of the community. He spends 81 days per year in Anaheim and I'm sure he's not running around the local community for most of the time. He's going between his mansion and the ballpark like most players. He could be playing on any team in MLB and have the same experience. But he could chose to play on a team that has a chance at winning. He could chose to go someplace like Houston and have a chance to win every year and probably save $100 million in taxes over the course of his contract. He can even buy a vacation home in Newport Beach if he wants to get some local flavor hanging around with the homeless community at the beach.

There is no salary cap in MLB. The only cap is what teams are willing to spend with luxury tax and how much revenue they are making. . The Dodgers projected payroll tax for 2023 is actually about $25 million less then the Angels. The Dodgers franchise is valued at about 2x the Angels right now based on revenue. Teams like Dodgers and Yankees have the money to spend whatever they want and so do several other teams. Maybe Ohtani's loyalty will keep him there. Maybe he'll look at Trout who's played 3 play off games in 12 years and decide that isn't what he wants

How come Ohtani is the only player from Japan that has found some home away from home in Anaheim? There have been dozens of star players that have come over from Japan and had bidding wars with multiple teams trying to sign them and what teams have they chosen? Mariners, Yankees, Mets, Cubs, Dodgers, Red Sox, Rangers. I’m sure I’m missing some teams. Some of those players left their first MLB teams in free agency and I don’t remember any of them choosing to go to Anaheim. And yes he’s from Japan and he’s there every offseason and on the road half of the regular season. So he spends 81 days a year in Anaheim and he has his entire life taken care of, he has translators everywhere he goes. I guarantee the % of Japanese people that live where he plays has little to no influence on where he plays just like it hasn’t for any other Japanese players that have played in MLB. And if he and the Angels had long term plans why did he sign a year contract? Surely they could have extended him for 10 years if he wanted to be there.

They don't allow homeless at Newport Beach. You're thinking of Venice

Could be because the team is for sale. Maybe the current owners didn't want to interfere with future plans of the next owners. The one year contract allows them to sell high with still having both Trout and Ohtani while giving Ohtani more money since he may have had a record setting arbitration year anyway.

A headline just scrolled by me that Ohtani is considering playing in the World Baseball Classic. Doesn’t surprise me really.

Has always seemed to me that the card manufacturers have struggled with WBC cards due to the shortness of the tournament and how to then interface it with other products. Nevertheless, it he plays some it would likely create some interesting new cards, without licensing issues (dunno how that works for WBC), as well as possibly some new Japanese cards.

A random Ohtani question I have is in regards to his 7 appearances in the Outfield in 2021. If I am reading his Baseball Ref. page correctly, that is the grand total in MLB, & only in that season. Perhaps it has happened in Spring Training however.

I have been wondering if those few games in turn generated any card images. A few Ohtani base running cards have appeared - have any showing him in the Outfield? I’m really not up for scrolling through 5,500 card images on COMC to figure it out.

Reduced search to 2021 Topps Now...it's the only one with him in the field that I saw. I would highly doubt that there is a fielding pic in a mainline set.

Great to see so many people care about Ohtani's future.

I earnestly think the truth is that Sho simply hasn't made up his mind yet. He's a very malleable guy when it comes to data and change. He weighs the totality of the situation and has enough control to not act on emotion. If he feels the new ownership does not create a path for winning, he will simply leave - and rightfully so. If he feels the latter, he might stay. It's quite simple. No need to get mad at each other about it

I struggle with the new FF auto. It's a great card but I can't get over the blah new auto style. Cannot fault others for acquiring it, but I need more time to come around.

I just realized Ohtani's new autograph isn't new at all. It's actually just the bottom half of his full autograph.

Now that he hasn't been injured for a couple years he doesn't have the time to do his full signature with the amount he signs and his workload....just being efficient lol

Hi all! First time posting on Blowout Forum. I’m selling a few cards, and I’m very sick of eBay, so I thought I give this a try. Here’s the Shohei Ohtani I’m selling. If you’re interested, let me know and I’ll work with you.
It was a redemption auto I pulled from 2021 Bowmans Best. 2021 Bowmans Best Heatwave Lava refractor parallel auto #d /50.

Thanks!
