Seems like Ohtani has only been able to be great at either hitting or pitching at one time. In the first half he was great at hitting and only good at pitching. In the second half it was the reverse -- great at pitching and merely good at hitting:

First half:
Hitting: 1.062 OPS
Pitching: 3.49 ERA

Second half (so far):
Hitting: .840 OPS
Pitching: 2.13 ERA

I can't imagine how hard it is to do both at a high level in the modern-day big leagues.

I think the HR derby put a kink in his performance. Next year, I’d bet he opts out. He is still having an all-time great, unprecedented season. I’m just happy to have some of his cards

I think it ushered in pull-mode.

You could be right....you could be wrong....we will find out in 5-6 years! But the comparison seems like apples to oranges. Wouldn't a better comparison be Ichiro?

There's also a much larger Asian presence on the West Coast and a much shorter flight home for him. You can close your eyes and throw a rock and hit a good sushi joint on the West Coast. I'm back on the East Coast now and I can't find halfway decent sushi to save my life (and I'm literally living on Cape Cod).

I can totally understand why Asian players want to be on the West Coast. Hell, I'm not even Asian and I wish I were back there again.

When he was hitting better in the first half of the season, did he have better hitters around him at that time than he does now?

He's not leaving the Angels. He's already proven he cares less about money than any other player. When Ohtani transferred, he got a financial structure as if he was coming out the minor leagues because he wasn't 25 and had less than 6 years of pro ball. That's Year 1, 2 and 3, at the league minimum of 500k plus an initial signing bonus of 2 million. He then signed an 8 mil, 2 year deal to buy out arbitration years 4 and 5. And in year 6 he'll go to arb and probably set a record for $25 million. So in total he'll make out with about $35-$40 for his first 6 years.

If Ohtani waited 2 more years to transfer from Japan(entering MLB in 2020), he would've entered the main free agency pool in which he would've had a $200+ million offer.

some guy named Trout, dont know if youve heard of him. Rendon too, but he sucks now. Jared Walsh in all star form as well, the whole Angels team is on the IL right now.

BBCPedia is probably the most underrated site in the hobby. They have the pack odds in a nice little organized spreadsheet format that makes doing math easier than doing it usually. If you're clever, you can often times determine print runs or ballpark them by using those and multiplying with a 1/1 insert or something.

Thanks for the tip, I will take a look at the site (is it bbcpedia.com). Did you ever do the print run calculation on the topps black label black cards?
