wifey and I are very laid back. We had an open bar and everyone had way too much fun.

Most places I know charge by the drink. Unless you are able to purchase a set amount of booze beforehand, I don't know many places that don't charge based on the amount consumed (ie per drink).

You basically run up a bar tab for everyone.

this depends on your contract and if you buy in advance.

i don't think it's tacky. weddings can get expensive.

but, as people have said, expect the gifts to go down a bit if you go with a cash option, or a destination wedding.

At my wedding we had an open bar for the first $1k and then after that it was a cash bar. If a few alchies thought we were being cheap, so be it. I could give a rats arse.

We had a few kegs and a double barreled daiquiri/margarita machine.

It was perfect.

No idiot relatives or friends getting shwasted and starting shiz either.

It was perfect.

Something about like this...

I don't find it tacky. Most of the cash bars I have seen give out beer and wine for free and the hard stuff you need to pay for. I don't see any problem with that. I didn't go to the person's wedding for the alcohol, I went for the people getting married.
Agree 100%! We did this for our wedding! If you want to get drunk on free drinks from me then I didn't want you at our wedding! I don't care if you thought we were tacky!

Wedding receptions are always about what you can afford without putting yourself in a financial bind. The Mrs. and I had a top shelf open bar complete with shots (probably a rarity these days). A good time was had by all and nobody died. Only negative was the caterers set up a table by the door with pastries for people to take as they left and one of my groomsmen fell into it. Of course I got married in '95 and my father was a member of the club/hall we held the reception in so I got a sweet deal on the bar expenses.

If you bring the pain when it comes to food then yeah, the open bar can become a second thought.

What are people's thoughts on having food set out after dinner has been served? I went to a wedding once that had things like deli sandwiches out after dinner, and I marked that down as a possible must-have if I ever get married. That or a huge dessert bar, I think if you do things like that that can make a huge lasting impression on your guests.

I've been to a couple weddings in Greece. There, they charged for everything from a bottle of water, to a can of soda, to a beer. The bride and groom sent me to get water for them and the guy got pissed, apparently it's a common scam. The food, however, was free (random people no one knew took advantage of this with to-go trays).

one of the vendors we were looking at had options for some specialty stations for after the main course.

like a Taco/Nacho bar, a Coney bar, etc.

From an older post of mine:

My cousin's wedding was the best I've been too. Vodka iced sculpture, open bar, dessert buffet style with chocolate fountain. Basically the key seems to be making it interactive for all involved. If you're doing it in a big area and I'm assuming part of it will be outside, then heck maybe consider fireworks or something that utilizes the space.

Oh and either some kind of booze or snack take-home for all guests.
Sandwiches and stuff I guess depends on how early you have the main meal, but between appetizers, salad, dinner, whatever it may be, go with the desserts. Chocolate fountain, popcorn machine, etc. - keep it fun.

For most Big Events .. we do like this ... Its open bar .. for 2-3hrs .. Most likely if you are there early its because you are family , cared enough to sshow up early .. these people should get open bar .. usually set price per item before ... bring in and tally onlly those drinks .. or just pay set price for certain shelf for those hours ... and than we also try to set a bottle of hard liquor at every table .. so that when open bar is over those guests still have free drinks if they choose .

any late stragglers or late shows are just there because its a party of someone they know .. dont care to pay for your drinks ..

Am I the only person that wouldn't want any alcohol at their wedding? I can't stand people when they're drunk. I've been drunk before and remembering how I've seen people act and how I acted when drunk, I'd rather not deal with that during my wedding. Call me insane, but I'm not technically against alcohol, I just don't knowingly drink it because I've seen how people act when drunk. (Story of me being drunk was the waiter accidentally gave me an alcoholic drink when I asked for a lemonade, the waiter told me right before I left that he accidentally gave me an alcoholic drink, and I had thought the lemonade tasted strange when I drank it. This happened at Applebee's)

Wife and I eloped. We had a party the weekend after. Margarita machine, BYOB, and we cooked out. My wife and I are not the type of people who spend money on ridiculous stuff generally (retire by 45 plan). The only reason we even had the party was to appease my mom and her mom.
