Ben Macdonald, Oriole pitcher had some hype early 90's. 1st overall pick in 89 draft.

In 2015, every fifth thread created in the baseball section was about Kris Bryant. You weren’t cool if you didn’t start at least 1 KB thread that year.

You can't compare Trout to Wandermania. Trout wasn't on everyones radar even when 2011 update came out. It took a few pro seasons before Trout was really sought after by everyone. I couldn't sell 2009 Trouts BC Autos at $80 for the longest. I remember doing shows with trouts in my display and only a few people would come ask. Wandermania is more comparable to 2001 when Pujols and Ichrio hit the bigs.

Strasburg & Harper both came way more hype than Trout. Wander is pretty good from what we've seen but not enough to be all in. He is a complete gamble at the moment imo.

Granted all of this is driven by people who live off the hobby and/or are looking for a big score.

If you don't believe me look at the crap from about 2000 to through 2012. It was guys like Bruce, the Uptons, Heyward, Blalock, Burroughs. Some good players in there for sure, but not many 22 year old all star and MVP caliber players. I mean Upton and Heyward were almost to that level as prospects, and Upton the Young at least looked like he was going to get there for a little while, but those guys all pale in comparison to the young MLB production we've seen over the last decade or so. Also look in to the future. There will be zero 20 year old superstar debuts this year. The next best bet is really The Martian and for that to happen he'd really have to break out. Obviously somebody can come out of nowhere and all of a sudden be a 20 year old star in The Show, but it's not that likely. We normally see it coming because the guys who are stars at 20 are typically the elite prospects. There will always be hype, but for the last decade or so the talent has matched...or exceeded...the hype.

The hype for Jefferies was amazing. He was as can't miss as they come. Of course he was a relative bust.

Back in 2014 with the Kris Bryant hype raging, there was a good few months of Jose Abreu.

1) Vlad 2) Jeffries 3) Trout Keep in mind that Griffey, Harper, and Soto were already starting in The Show by 19.

I would argue as a Rays prospect Longoria had as much hype as Wander. He also exceeded expectations his first season, winning ROY, being an all star, finishing with MVP votes. 4.8 war in 120 games. Also had 6 homers and an OPS near 1.100 through two playoff series before hitting a brick wall in the World Series.
He was the most asked for name at all shows etc. How them Longoria cards doing now? |

I used to think a guy playing in Tampa was hobby poison but not anymore.

Oh, wow. Someone said Delmon Young. That’s a deep cut. You could get his BCDP auto for like $5 now. I remember that card being the toast of Beckett, Tuff Stuff and every collectible magazine for many months. A cautionary tale…
Longoria hype was way up there, too. And like someone else said, Longoria nearly lived up to the hype and if you invested in him, you’re likely taking a big hit. I think Harper and Heyward outrank Franco’s hype but I would put Franco ahead of most others. His hype really is nuts right now. |

I know Puig was mentioned but his hype was crazy. I sold one of his regular insert cards for 32 dollars. It's now a 10 cent card or whatever. Also traded one of his chrome autos for a Michael Jordan rookie.. one of the better trades I've ever done.

I think post-draft, Mark Prior was probably the most hyped I've ever seen. The first $10 million guy out of the draft, highest until Strasburg came along - but with the frenzy of the Cubs die-hards behind him. Only 9 starts in the minors, came up to Wrigley in May and K'd 10 in his debut with the W. It was Prior-insanity during those months.
