I'll answer the question. Most people are excited for the National. You aren't. Is that a good enough response?

I’m excited but not as much as normal. No parties, small promos, expensive wax, overpriced cards, etc. Will be the busiest for sure but I believe the least amount of fun.

I'm just excited to talk to other collectors in person. Don't have to buy anything or sell anything. Just chill, sit back, and shoot the #@#@#@#@. Maybe talk about all the cards we sold too early... Anyone going to the show to do this as well?

No one is forcing anyone to overpay for anything. Go there, have fun. If you find value, swoop it up. Supply and demand rules this market. Be smart. Most of all enjoy the show. Not everyone has the privilege to attend.

It's their way of saying "We don't want to pay for booth space but we'll be at everyone else's booths instead".
I absolutely respect you but disagree with you on this. I think upper deck was seriously concerned that the border ban was going to stay in effect and (rightfully) as such their Canadian (aka Hockey) buyers would not be in attendance. That combined with the possibility that the national might/wouldn't happen caused them to pull out. They decided at the last minute to try to salvage things but it is an epic failure IMO

I can tell you I'm not excited for this year's National for the following reasons:

1) Seems like promos and fun from the manufacturers are down or non-existant.

2) Wax/Memorabilia/Cards will be overpriced

3) At least 3 of my long-time Platinum friends who attend every year won't be there.

4) Place is going to be packed which does not sound exciting for the ability to get into tables to look or the autograph pavilion

5) I had another conference moved up so I can only attend 3 days this time

6) With all of the newbies there this year, I can see a lot of fights/arguments between us Platinums and newbies when we rightfully cut in front of them in the lines for autograph guests.

7) If TriStar brings their usual contingent of personnel for the autograph pavilion, they will be over run and things will get out of hand.

I am excited to see my friends that are coming though.

So much for being an inclusive group. Lots of us vs them sentiment being thrown around (from the non exciteds). If I have to walk around 10 people filming you tube videos to get to a booth and dig thru dollar boxes next to 5 “newbies” digging thru dollar boxes next to me im all for it. Growing the hobby has been a general concern for the last 20 years and once it happens people are upset. That being said I’m super pumped for this year not an apprehension or concern at all.

This is a good point. I'll add that these YouTubers are also big spenders which dealers will appreciate. It is not necessarily a distraction when you know their intent is to buy cards. I won't turn anyone's money away even if I have 5 cameras in my face.

In regards to card prices, it may not be as bad as people think. Using myself as an example (and I'll post a booth update in a separate thread) but I plan to have tons of $1-$50 cards mostly priced at or below eBay, and I've even got some surprises in the dollar boxes to keep people digging. I am setting up with the intention of selling cards. I can't be the only one who feels this way. Also it is clear based on eBay sales lately that the slab dump is happening already. I would imagine lots of base rookie PSA 9's and 10's will be available and probably the easiest to strike a deal on. Some guy with 50 Zion Williamson Rated Rookie PSA 9's may be more inclined to cash out now as this surge of base listings will continue as PSA gets more orders out the door. I think anything colored or numbered will be overpriced but those types of low pop low serial #'d cards are the mostly likely to run up in the future so I can understand that.

I did think the lack of promos would be a bummer initially. I used to bring empty boxes to the National and fill them up Wednesday night with Silver Pack singles from Panini. I based my entire show around that promotion. But what this year has done is forced me to focus on the cards I own already. I have a lot of inventory and since I won't need space for Panini promos I can fill my table up with existing inventory, spend less money, and probably make more sales than usual. I've never really enjoyed a National in terms of just taking a step back and being in the moment. I've always been so consumed with wheeling and dealing silver/gold packs that I don't think I've ever appreciated the other 99% of the hobby during that week. I am the least stressed I've ever been heading into a National.

What do you think the reason(s) for all the non-excitement is all about???? I have asked a few people and they have offered various reasons. What say you?
Soto got off to a slow start. The team is still under .500

Oh, did you mean the National?

I believe there is only ONE National this year, was not aware that there were multiples.

Why do you say there is no excitement? Ticket sales say otherwise.

If I was going, I don't know if I would be as excited as I was in years past when I went. I've gone twice to Cleveland and both times have spent less than $750 but was able to buy several boxes and get a ton of Panini packs plus a few other items/singles. Now, you'd spend $750 and be lucky to get a box or two. Plus I think a lot of savvy collectors go and they probably know what things really should be priced at. I could see attendance being high since it feels like attendance is high for a lot of events these days due to pent up demand. I just wonder if it's going to be more like a museum than a sales floor. People bought high and don't want to come down to realistic prices. Realistic buyers won't buy high when they feel like the items they want might be overpriced.

Somethings gotta give here.

Im definitely super excited but right now its still really hard to judge values on sooo many things. We went from crazy highs to a sort of correction but prices still seem high compared to years past. I think a lot of people may still a be a bit gun shy to pull the trigger, especially on higher end cards until we are comfortable that we have hit "bottom". Or at least until we see some consistency in overall prices. I've been buying a selling for a long time but haven't bought much this year for the reasons above. Until I feel completely comfortable that things have leveled out to a new normal I will keep watching from the sidelines.

Why do people want to put an “S” where it doesn’t belong? Is there more than one National this year? I don’t get it either.

No Panini silver packs announced yet…so I won’t be able to blow the budget on NASCAR cards…

Normally NASCAR boxes get you 12 packs while other sports (except WNBA) get you less packs. Optic basketball a couple of years ago was a great deal at $60 a box and you got 4 silver packs per box…it was a pain carrying those Luka and Trae optic rookies and not pulling a single Zion from my silver packs…

Panini isn’t going to have gold or silver packs this year per my LCS. They will have something else called “breaker packs.” It definitely won’t be the same.

Because it's going to be a bunch of guys not willing to sell because they are in so far over their heads buying at peak prices and are waiting for prices to bounce back (they aren't going back up)

They don’t have to have promo packs. They had to before to move old wax. Nobody is having that issue now.

Correct. Unfortunately though consumers will remember this when they do have wax that they need to move. The up market won’t last forever and neither does consumer loyalty. If you want to keep some people in the hobby this isn’t the way to do it. I stopped collecting from 1996-2016 in part because of the over saturation of cards in the marketplace. Corporate action or inaction does have consumer consequences.
