They need to rebuild and just dump salary not trade for AD. They have a good foundation and if they can sell KD or Kyrie on KP, Knox, Robinson, Trier, Zion (dreaming) then I think they are set up better for the long haul.
I don't think the 1st is untouchable. Not if AD is the player coming back. In any other scenario i'd say yes. Anyone on the Roster plus picks should be on the table for the Knicks.

I'm sure NO would want Zubac to be part of a package the way he's been playing lately.

I just don't love the idea of trading to transform from a tanking team to a contender I don't think it ever works. Yes AD is better than Kyrie or Durant but you also need other players for him to play with and as a Knicks fan I think I would rather have top 3 pick / Knox / Robinson / Durant or Kyrie than just AD and KP. He isn't contending with Holiday in NO why would he be able to contend by himself in NY or at best with Kristaps and a roster full of league minimum guys with no draft picks to replenish the roster.

Problem is right now that pick is only a 14% chance at being #1 overall. If you can turn a 14% chance for the top pick into Anthony Davis you do it.

No way does he go to Boston unless it includes Tatum and the Grizz pick as the starting point. Why would the Pels want next years #1 which will be in the high 20's when Boston has Grizzlies pick and even Sac pick to offer.

They can't trade for AD until July 1st (when they would resign Kyrie) unless they trade Kyrie before then.

And correct me if I am wrong. NY is trying to trade Courtney Lee & Tim Hardaway Jr right now to shed salary so they can sign 2 max players.

Why wouldn't you want some combination of KP with 2 of the following players : Durant, Kyrie or AD?

The pels don’t have the leverage here. Unless they want to gamble on a “chance” at landing Zion they might not get as much as they are looking for.

Houston just goes all the way---4 first rounders, Capella, and Gordon.

My gut says he ends up a Rocket.
Eric Gordon is almost negative value at this point and AD is twice the player Butler is, plus he has two years left on his contract after this year not an expiring contract like butler. Capella is good but the player you build a trade around, and those 4 first rounders won’t come to fruition until 2025 at the earliest. IMO not going to happen

But that is what they did with Melo, I know AD is WAY better than Melo ever was, but they just simply don't have the infratructure and roster formation to gut it for AD and still have the ability to surround him with a good supporting cast and if you get AD then you are taking yourself out of the running for top picks. You will be stuck in the middle ground of not having the financial flexibility or draft capital to build depth and a championship roster while also being too good to compete for a top draft pick.

It makes sense for the Lakers or Boston to go for AD because they have some young players to trade while still keeping Kyrie/Horford and Lebron.

The knicks aren’t getting those guys at max in FA. The knicks don’t get quality FA like that.

Nah. You go for it and try to get KD or Kyrie to come in the summer.

That is exactly what they are trying to do but if you are NY and you think you can trade THJ and Lee and have a chance at KD and Kyrie wouldn't you rather have KP, KD, Kyrie along with Knox, Trier, Robinson, and a top 3 pick? That would give them depth and a young core to build around while also competing this year. As opposed to gutting the roster for AD and then signing another and only competing for one year.

Nope. The Celtics would need to add about $17 mil of salary to make a trade like this work. And again it would have to be after July 1st because of the Derrick Rose rule.

But Brown, Rozier, and the Boston pick next year is a package that the Lakers can trump easily and then the Pels would just send them there. Everyone knows what Boston has to offer and if Boston wants an elite player they will need to include some major assets.

I've just seen the Knicks blow that philosophy too many times to get me excited to keep trying it. I get it from a Raptors fan since you guys crushed it on the Kawhi front and it's working out perfectly but the Knicks would blow it. They would then sign a bunch of 35 year olds who are terrible chemistry guys and it would blow up in their face. I would rather keep the rebuild going and go all in this summer on KD/Kyrie.

Ahh yes, you are right.
Forgot in NBA the salaries have to match.

But I will be willing to give up KP to get AD.

On top of the salaray the Pels just aren't going to look at the Celtics sitting there with 4 first round picks and take just Tatum and salary dump.

It is like when the Yankees had a super deep farm system and everyone was asking for more from them than other teams because they had it - that is what the Celtics are going to face when they try and make trades. It is a double edged sword where its great to have all these assets and trade capital but at the same time it means teams are going to ask for more from you.

Not sure how the Lakers would even come close unless the package included both Rondo (expiring) and Ball. LeBron would have to actually play PG not just point forward.

I get it. For sure. Your guys front office is a bit... um... ya...

But with the change to the draft and the bottom three teams all having equal chance at the #1. It really hampers the whole saviour scenario. The Knicks right now have a:

14% chance at #1
13.4% chance at #2
12.7% chance at #3
12% chance at #4
27.8% chance at #5
20% chance at #6

There's a better chance they pick 4-6 than 1-3. Holding hope for the #1 got a lot harder this year.
