Boston needs some sort of rim protector IMO, unsure a combo of Griffin-Horford would do it

I do realize that neither Cleveland or Golden State had significant ones so might be moot

I would be very hesitant to commit beyond a couple years on Blake. Will be 29 next season and his injury history is scary. You can also see a clear decline in his athleticism the last 2 years. I worry what kind of player he will be down the road as he continues to age.

Honest question for you, or any Boston fans, but you and I have always had good discussions.

Cavs call up and offer Kevin Love for Avery Bradley, Jae Crowder, and Jaylen Brown. The money would work. It would also leave your salary cap basically the same so you can still make a run for Hayward. Wouldn't change that. It also allows Boston to keep the #1 pick and the Nets pick next year.

Keep in mind Kevin Love is under contract for 3 more years, at a reasonable price of like 25 million (compared to the like 35 Hayward will get) so he isn't a rental like a Paul George might be.

I realize Jaylen Brown still has a lot of potential, so might be tough to give up, but you clearly have plenty of young guys on the roster in Smart/Rozier/Fultz/Picks.

Do the Celtics listen? Hang up? Do the Cavs even offer (Cavs fans tell me I'm crazy)

I guess my theory is Boston gets better by having a potential "Big 4" of Thomas/Fultz/Love/Hayward + Picks + Rozier/Smart

Cleveland needs to do something and I think bringing back guys that would get legitimate minutes (not the Channing Frye type minutes) in Bradley/Crowder would help. Brown is also just the type of young potential the Cavs also need to get back at some point.

Cavs fans are going a little crazy with potential moves they think we can make. I think something like this is more realistic to what we should be looking to do if they were to shop Kevin Love

Just curious. Looking for honest feedback.

They want to hangup put instead offer a deal which replaces Brown with Rozier and include a non-Brooklyn 1st round pick.

Fair enough. I knew Brown might be a sticking point. At the same time with some many young players and/or picks I'd at least ask for him knowing the Celtics have potentially a ton of depth.

That would certainly be an interesting discussion of Rozier and a 1st (which Cleveland needs) was the counter.

Thanks for the reply.

No chance...you don't do business with your main competition....even though at this point it's not much of a competition....

That third year is a player option for Love, so really it's only a 2 year contract.

Sportrac and Hoopshype are showing two different things. You are probably correct. Weird that Sportrac has that wrong.

Either way he's not a one year rental.

Fair enough. Definitely a valid point.

Although I'm not sure (if Boston gets Hayward) that Thomas/Fultz/Love/Hayward wouldn't be damn close as competition

A front line including Kelly Olynyk and Kevin Love is not really sustainable in terms of defense. Horford is 30 years old and Love will be 29 before the start of next season. An aging front line with limited defense is not good. And between Horford (27M) and Love (25M) you'd be paying about 52 million for a relatively old front line with defensive limitations.

Don't disagree necessarily. Perhaps you then shop Horford.

It was just thinking out loud. Cavs fans with all these Kevin Love trades are simply pie in the sky I think. I was trying to come up with something that wasn't necessarily "star for star" as I think you'd have to take back a few pieces if you did trade Love. I don't think he brings back a 1 for 1 deal unless you get 75 cents on the dollar.

I just used Boston since they had been connected to him before and they have so many young players and/or picks (if you assume again they sign Hayward or someone else - I wouldn't have considered the trade if I didn't think they'd bring in another name)

It's an interesting mental exercise. There are a few issues with Love that make him hard to trade.
1. His salary is one of the top 25 in the league
2. He has a history of injuries -- when was the last time he played 70 games in the regular season?
3. He's a minus defender
4. He's on the back end of his career and non-athletic bigs (29 or older and 6'10" or above) tend to have a precipitous decline in their 30's.
5. He is being shopped because he doesn't really help a team win a title. If you are a team that's already in the playoffs, he probably hurts more than he helps.

I think thats a lot for Love. Who at times looks like a top 10 player in the league, and at times a scapegoat and a guy who doenst fit. I am probably the biggest AB fan here, I think hes more valuable than IT for this team and I am drinking the Brown kool aid.

Am I a homer for saying thats way too much for Love? Brown shouldnt be in there. Bradley and Crowder and some picks maybe. Crowder's deal might be a top 5 in basketball...its really that good.

I would even put the Brooklyn pick in there (2018) over Brown.

Its weird Love is great but he has like a stigma about him now, I mean theyre talking about him for a 1 year rental of George?

Love/Fultz/IT/Hayward is a massive top 4 tho with Brown, Smart, etc off the bench.

Also the Celtics have traded with the Cavs, the Heat, the division rival Nets, Knicks etc.

Ainge plays no favorites. David Griffin calls with a great offer, Ainge will listen.

The problem I see with that deal is that the Celtics will commit 50M for the next two (or even three) seasons to a Horford/Love frontcourt. And you are not going to win anything with that.

The most logical move, for both teams, is Horford for Love. Each team would have to see what extras they prefer (expirings, less salary, role players) but that should be the starting point.

Is $50M really going to be that bad though when a guy like Hayward, and keep in mind I'm factoring him into all of this, is about to get $35M a year?

The Horford and Love deals are going to be middle of the pack once all these upcoming FA's starting signing their deals.

That has to have some value.

If I were the Celtics and I were looking to trade assets for a big, I would go after Rudy Gobert. For about the same amount of money you would pay Kevin Love, you get someone who is an elite defender, better rebounder, younger, and can clean up the defensive weaknesses of other people on your team (IT and Olynyk). Gobert also has legit size (7'1"), he's 24 years old, and is under contract for a longer period of time (4 years).

Of course -- trying to add Gordon Hayward in free agency and then trying to trade for Rudy Gobert would probably really upset Jazz fans.

It's more about fit. Love and Horford don't provide enough defense. Not necessarily because of how they play (I think Love is an underrated defender and was the best Cavs on the defensive end in the Finals) but how they complement each other.

They're both the kind of players who look much better being complemented with a good rebounder/rim protector.

Gobert is more valuable than Love. Celtics will need to start by offering their '18 Nets pick if they want Rudy.

Rudy is probably the best center in the league and is cheap.

It would need to be Fultz, Nets #1, Brown etc and why would the Jazz do that?

I thought the Celtics should have traded for Nurkic last year before Portland got him (and a first round pick), in exchange for Plumlee

The Celtics taking in Zeller allowed the necessary cap space to sign LeBron. It was widely known that the deal was done to facilitate cap flexibility. The C's walked away with a draft pick as compensation for helping. Zeller to Boston was a significant part of getting LeBron pack to Cleveland. That's pretty big business.
