He needs 22 HR and a .329 average the last 60 games assuming 4 AB/G. Probably neither happens. I hope people don’t look at this season as a disappointment if the production doesn’t pick back up. These are long seasons. He’ll be even better next year.

Only four shortstops have ever hit 40 HR in a season, and it has been done a total of 13 times.

Rico Petrocelli hit exactly 40 in 1969, in what appears to be a peculiar spike in his career trajectory. Tatis hit 42 a few years ago, in what we know was a “peculiar” spike.

The other 11 40-HR seasons were all accomplished by A-Rod (6x) and Ernie Banks (5x). A-Rod’s accomplishments are obviously tainted, which really leaves Banks and the only legitimate 40-HR shortstop.

So, even if Gunnar doesn’t hit 50, it would be historically significant to hit 40.

And a 40/20 season would be even more significant, as only A-Rod and Tatis have done that.

The long season takes its toll no matter how young a player is. Last year he hit 11 hrs Aug/Sept. This month he's hit 2 so far (after getting 9/8/8 in Apr/May/June). August will be the telling month if he will get to 40 for the season.
