Nice one, cjraleigh. I picked up a 1.5 that's a little stained in the upper left corner last year. That 2 is a real nice, clean copy. Beautiful color. Shoot even the lower corner is clean and you don't see that with many 1953 Topps copies.

In one of the baseball card threads, mjohnatgt posted a picture in reply to the thread topic and it reminded me that I had hundreds of these cards.
I used to give them away once a year to kids that I taught on Sunday mornings.
I remember asking my mom about them and she had some from being a child in the 1940s.
She grew up fairly poor and when someone gave her something she treasured it.
Kids had very little compared to todays children.

I have some dating as far back as 1888.
The cards were printed by many different publishing companies and were
to be handed to children each Sunday. Each card corresponded with the lesson that day.

These cards are from four different publishers and are all dated from 1900 to 1909.

I took a chance on two binder pages with 17 1964 Topps Stand Up cards.
Most of the cards were in this condition including two Colt 45 cards I was after.

Both pages were just under $10.00.

Lots of cool sets out there! I am looking for a HOF player in this set, but they get pricey. Those cards look in amazing condition!

$1.06 delivered. I just liked this guy's style. NM-MT was a bonus.

Delivered in a team bag taped to a notecard...not even a soft sleeve, card saver, or top loader. Love it.

I like the ballpoint pen autos. I've been casually looking for those for a few players

Yeah, I've been looking to add them. Like them over the Sharpies on vintage cards

I have been buying some cards on COMC, will ship them home soon. Here is my most recent purchase. The seller had this as a filler card. A little paper loss at the top, but doesn't distract from the card at all in my opinion. The back is perfect, so I don't know what they were thinking...

When I was a kid, Curt Flood was at a card show signing cards for free, and I had a fairly beat up card for him to sign. It was this one:

He used a ball point pen, and back then people made fun of me because the auto, especially in a ball point pen, "destroyed the card" (the thought process back then).

I had it graded by PSA just for nostalgic purposes, and lo and behold, the ball pen auto got an AUTO 10.

Reminds me of a personal experience meeting Warren Spahn before he passed. Back in 2001, he was signing at the All Star Fan Fest in Seattle and I was excited to get his autograph on a ball. I wasn't collecting anymore at that point but I did want his John Hancock on an All-Star ball to commemorate the experience. After all, my opportunities to meet golden era HOF'ers were not many. After patiently waiting in line, I excitedly walked up with a smile and was surprised to see him greet me with a frown. For a half second, I thought he was in a bad mood, but his handler saw my consternation and quickly explained he has great difficulty signing balls now due to the grip needed. I then looked down and his poor hands looked really arthritic. He signed it, nonetheless, on the sweet spot, I profusely thanked him and I have cherished it ever since. Still sits in my study, the ball point pen ink still looking great! Thank you Mr Spahn and RIP!

Picked up some 1973 O-Pee-Chee Canadian baseball cards.
The fronts were identical to the American Topps cards and the backs had both English and French text.
I really like the rough cut edges.

Nice! I love rough cuts. Some collectors hate them...

Hi all. I post more often over on N54, but enjoy the vintage displays here as well. Nice cards, everyone!

Here randomly are some of my recent pickups:

Thanks. Yeah, that Banks was not easy to find. Centering in most cases is actually a condition attribute that's relatively down on my list; I think for the most part the focus that vintage collectors place on centering today is overblown - but for cards like '54 Topps or '63 Topps is another example - where design elements like lettering is very close to the border - I think it can become important.

I'd say that 2/3 of the '54 Banks cards at least, even ones in high grade - were cut bad with that name pushed up to the top. To me it just looks off when I see that. I used to have an otherwise stunning Banks RC in a PSA 3.5, but it was like that at the top. Never could get comfortable with that card, though the surface and color on it were probably better than the one I have now.

Picked up that 4 at the National this summer in Cleveland.

I'm surprised by the low grade on this one now that I have it in hand, but that's what drew me to it.

The centering, sharp corners, and lack of paper loss / damage on the reverse led me to believe there was something worse that I couldn't see. But really, it's not much.

There's a light crease running north-south the length of the card. Through 'first base', it passes between the 'b' and the 'a' in 'base'. There's signs of another parallel wrinkle, but it's not as strong, mostly just a high spot on the front that can be seen in certain light.

On the reverse near the top border, there may have been some light wrinkling but it doesn't show on the front.

This looks more like a PSA-3...that presents like a strong 6.

It was $22.49 dlvd ($16.50+sh via ebay auction)

Luke Easter:
https://www.baseball-reference.com/p...astelu01.shtml

Easter hit 31 HR in 1952, second most in the AL to teammate Larry Doby's 32. Had Easter played in as many games as Doby, he probably would have had one bold mark on his career numbers.

He hit 2 home runs in the '48 Negro World Series and his Homestead Grays beat the Birmingham Black Barons 4-1. (17-yr old Willie Mays played for the Barons.)

Nice card.

Back in the earlier days of PSA, I feel like most cards like that could get a fair shake on the combination features of their grades as per the descriptions. For example, "technically" you can have quite a lot wrong with a card and still get a 1.5 or 2 - creases, bad OC, blown corners, etc.

But in recent times, it seems as if many of their graders treat condition as a worst case scenario based on a singular bad feature. Your card can have a visible wrinkle and perhaps still get a 4, but it had increasingly better look close to NM otherwise. If they see a card that looks VG or VGEX at an arm's length and notice a crease, that often inexplicably seems reason to strike it down only to a 1 or 1.5. I don't quite get this - per the standards a card should be able to be OC up to a certain amount AND have the wrinkle and still get the grade described - but often anymore cards like this seem to be downgraded.

Whatever - the opinion sellers clearly can do whatever they please. For me, if it just means I can get sharper looking cards that are downgraded in slabs for cheaper - so be it.
