I hear this said a lot. I was very much alive and I don't know what the heck you're talking about. What metric would you use to show this? Attendance? Tv ratings? I don't see any brink or massive improvement. Hopefully you can educate me. I remember Cal Rikpens game streak being huge and even many players runs at 3000 hits which no one cares a ton about now being followed closely, pre PED. I don't see a big delta in the attendance trend from that era. Just standard growth.

You don’t remember McGwire and Sosa’s chase for the record being a big thing?

I apologize as I made this thread about the greatness of Bobby Witt Jr, who truly seems wonderful for the game dovetail into PEDs.

All I wanted to do was state that once upon a time Alex Rodriguez was a 21 year old kid hitting .358 with an OPS over 1.000 and oh yeah was a SS to boot… finished 2nd in MVP voting, that’s it.

As for me, at 21 I was merely trying to get through Engineering school and score the occasional date. I couldn’t fathom preforming every day and in front of 30,000 and with expectation that I better be the next big thing after signing my record bonus right off the jump.

It was huge! In my opinion baseball was not "on the brink" and I am looking for statistical evidence of it and I don't see it in attendance or tv ratings, so I'm wondering how we define "on the brink"?

Ah, okay. That makes a little more sense. I think the “brink” that people are referring to is the state of baseball after the 1994 strike.

Fair. That was a low for sure, but I wouldn't call that the brink. Obviously fans were coming back. Attendance in 95 was higher than 1987 for perspective. Also the 95 world series is the highest rated world series, since 95 and was higher than pre-strike 93. The brink is massively overblown by a bunch of guys who wish their cards and memorabilia were worth more.

Julio just had more early investors who are not willing to take a loss. One of the main reasons I started collecting Bobby cards is because of how much cheaper he was than Julio.

Bobby in recent weeks has just caught up to Julio prices.

Keep in mind, Bobby is the second hottest name in baseball right now and Julio has been ice cold the entire season.

Good call. It won’t stay that way for much longer as they’ve seemed to even up.

I don't disagree with anything you're saying, but Witt is showing he is capable of putting up a 10war season. That's atmospheric. There are very few guys who can play at that level. Julio will have to bring that k rate way down or bring the power way up for him to get back into this conversation.

BBref - Active 10 WAR in a season players - Mike Trout, Mookie Betts, Aaron Judge.
12 Seasons 10 or higher since 2000. 9 different players, 3 of which are related to the off-topic discussions here. 3 of the remaining 6 were pitchers.

Take it back to 1990 and it is more impressive as there were only 4 seasons of 10+, and Clemens did 2 of those. Jose Rijo is the only player since 1990 with a 10 WAR season that didn't put up HOF numbers (excluding the arguments about Judge/Betts/Trout).

He should be Hobby-good.

IMO Witt is still extremely cheap versus his potential place in baseball long term. He's not just some creation of value systems caring about defense; he has a higher slugging percentage than both Juan Soto and Shohei Ohtani right now. Assuming he doesn't have a Gunnar July in September, he's having a season that probably would have won this year's NL MVP...and the eight before it.

There are only four active players that have a 9 WAR season as a one-way batter: Trout, Betts, Harper, and Judge. That's the kind of company you want your 24 year old hobby investment to be in, assuming Witt can finish out the year strong.
