Was thinking about how easy it is to forge Sho's C-8 autograph the other day. After seeing the news in the last 24hrs with the auto-pen scam(s), anyone buying any Sho auto not pack-pulled is insane. Heck, even pack-pulled have their own problems (wipe/re-sign), although much more confined.

Yeah I did a double take the first several times I saw that card.

Hahaha!

A 1/1 dual auto would easily fetch 6-figures.

I wonder if they'll both be signing on the book tour?

is there any details you have about his C-8 autograph or why he changed it?

just easier to do in volume?

His auto changed in Spring 2022 with no explanation. Would be a reasonable guess to assume that volume has a lot to do with it. It's literally half the auto of his original. The irony is that the last batch of cards he signed in the off-season for TN had a wonderful full auto as if he was going back to his original. Some of the reverence autos (probably signed in the same session) had the full beautiful auto as well. Last hurrah, maybe.

If you have a nice 2018 (maybe 2019) full auto, you should hold it unless you have multiples. It's not going to improve from here.

thanks for the info! super interesting

So 2022 topps now (after the world series) and 2022 reverance are the only ones with non C-8 autos?

basically need 2018-2021 for a nice auto it seems like

If you're being very discerning and borderline OCD (like me):

1. Original 2013 Auto
2. 2018 Debut Auto - Bowman proper, TC (non redemption), Finest (non redemption), GQ.
3. 2018 Sticker Auto - Same throughout rookie year. Smooshed version of the above.
4. 2018 Post TJS Auto - Bowman Chrome and pretty much everything else during rookie year released after ST.
5. 2019 Auto - Resembles 2018 Post TJS but less detailed on bottom half
6. 2020-21 - Degraded version of 2019 with little effort. Some exceptions based on session but not impressive - some are downright awful.
7. 2022 Off-Season - Close to 2018 Debut Auto but much more vertically compressed.
8. 2022 ST - The first C-8 auto
9. 2024+ - The C-8 auto with a vertical dash mark between the C and 8.

If I'm really concerned about price, I only buy 1, 2, 4 with particular preference to 1/2.

Speaking of Decoy, he made a cameo in Cooperstown in the yakyu exhibit.

If I ever end up dealing away my 50/50 set auto relic, one of the cards in return will have to be an on-card rookie auto with his full original sig.

It sounds like Ohtani autos from 2018-2021 should appreciate in value due to being a nicer/more elaborate autograph as there will be a lot of C-8 autos from 2022 and beyond comparatively. I personally have no interest in any C-8 autos.

I agree. However since I recently finally pulled the trigger on an Ohtani auto, I found myself gravitating toward 6,7 on the list due to the fact that I can't afford anything from 1-4 haha and not huge on the C-8 style.

His skinnier 2021 version on dynasty that year is probably his worst, I think this one is a happy medium between 2019 and 2021 and fits nicely in the white area. Anything bigger would be drowned out by his red sleeve. Plus I am just a sucker for red ink heritage, especially the red on black border '71 design.

What happened to his new "English" auto? I think Topps posted a card with it to their social media pages earlier this year, but autos pulled from recent sets seem to be his C-8 auto.

One is Wagyu beef, the other is dog food (unless you're Decoy).
