Here are a few pictures of a couple pickups. I'm eventually going to replace the Banks with a graded but it'll work for now!

I picked up my second graded HOF'er. I picked up a PSA 5 Robin Roberts for dirt cheap, I will post a picture when it comes. I now have 2 of the 31 hall of famers in this set PSA graded (only counting their base cards, not the baseball thrills/all star subsets)

You're doing well; keep em' coming...

Looking forward to seeing the Roberts, but of course he looks a lot better in an O's uni.

sweet!
I just finished the 1952 bowman set so I was thinking of starting another...I was going to start the 1959 topps as well! I love the design for some reason. I have the mays in the set so that will be a nice start.

Just posting some of the first few cards in the set I got around to taking pictures of. I have some coming in from a trade on here and some from COMC that I had purchased a while ago and just finally requested shipment on. Thanks for looking!

Update- Got a good amount in from a trade from a great member on here. I'm now up to 103/572 in hand, and have 20 more on the way from COMC that I had purchased a while ago

Progress feels good!

Nice! I have just started to collect the 1959 White Sox team set. I picked this for the Go Go Sox. I was not around when this happened and I was told it was a fun time. Plus I'm a white sox fan so this made in and easy decision for me to get into vintage.

Love the Hoyt, though it's a conflict of interest after watching 61* since I'm a Maris guy too.

Very nice so far....I enjoy building vintage sets too. I am working on 1960,1961,1963,1965, 1966, and 1967 right now to finish up the 60's decade. Have all the 70's sets except the 71..

Those mid to low grade HOF'er that look nice and have room to grow in price. I think the high end vintage market really prices many like myself out of the market and thus a lot more potential buyers for the mid grade cards.

Thanks!! That's so awesome, I eventually want to tackle some of the 60's sets as some of them are beautifully designed. I agree, I'm also priced out of the high-end vintage market so I only shop for mid-grade which I find a lot less stressful and more enjoyable

I picked up a nice amount of cards for the set from a great member on here, Otter05 in a trade and this was one of them. As you can tell she has been well loved since 1959 (it appears another card was face down on the front of it and it got wet and stuck/peeled off as the orange stuff is on top of the yellow/white of the card). I will eventually pick up a graded Mays as per my plan, but regardless this is the first vintage Mays card I have ever owned and I love it to death, I think she has character!

I haven't posted in this thread in a while, still chipping away at it. Here is my two most recent pickups from a trade with a great member on here. Not sure on the count off the top of my head but I should up well over 200 cards into the set

When I was probably 10-11 years old (25 or so years ago) my parents & I used to get out the Saturday paper on rare days that I wasn't playing baseball, and look for garage sales that listed Baseball Cards. The closest thing to a jackpot we hit was a shoebox that was filled with mostly '58 & '59s...mostly beat up. I have no idea what we paid for it, but it was like a treasure chest to me. Don Zimmer, Sparky Anderson, Bill Skowron, etc...I was on love.

A few months after you started, I also started to put the '59 set together since I already had 150 or so from the shoebox. Just like you, I'm focusing on centering more than anything else. I'm also trying to do it the 'old fashioned' way, by digging through vintage boxes at card shops & antique stores, etc. I've cheated & bought about 100 or so off of COMC, but only commons for the most part.

I've got all of the combo cards, the Mantle & Gibson from when I was a kid (not from the garage sale box...THAT would have truly been a treasure chest), picked up the Drysdale and a few other 'minor HOF'ers (guys like Richie Ashburn that don't nab a huge premium), but I still need the other bigguns (Mays, Aaron, Maris, Spahn, Clemente, etc).

Anyway, just wanted to say good luck on the build, it really is a gorgeous set, and there are so many x-factors in building it...white backs/grey backs, poor centering, high #'s with STARS that demand a decent premium, errors, variations, etc!

I finally took the time to scan in my set so far. Without further ado, here is my 1959 set so far.

Great story, and really a perfect set to build! I'm new here, but not to collecting. I started building my 59 set about 10 years ago. I, like you, was looking for mid grade, nicely centered raw cards, and mid grade graded stars. I bought a bulk commons lot (about 200 cards) at a show here in NY to get started for almost nothing back in 05. I picked up a few graded stars off of ebay over the next few years. Then every show that came to the area I would pick up about 8 - 12 more cards. I finished it last year, and am extremely proud of this set. It is my favorite and only 50's set. Good luck and I'm looking forward to your progress!

Awesome stuff man! I recently started/completed my '56 Topps set in memory of my late mam-maw.

I am now working on completing '54 Topps; I'm about 80% of the way there.

I think next I will do '53 Topps; then work on some other 50s sets- I love the baseball thrills cards from '59, I'll probably end up doing this set too!

keep it up! it does not get much better than the 50's sets IMO. I am about 95% finished with 1958 and 90% with 1955. love the 50's!
