Left off the rebuilding Houston Astros 40 man roster. No September call up. A black eye X 1000 (almost as bad as Giancarlo with not as much fanfare). Another mixed results season from both statistics and maturity. Will the real Delino DeShields Jr please stand up? What you got to say...the line is open

I'm bullish on him. I think he can get on base and make things happen. Glad to see the hapless Rangers rolling the dice on him. If he has even an ok year he'll be hot.

He is a fast kid who gets on base often and might someday become a decent leadoff hitter. I don't see him ever becoming a big star or anything but I think he still has the potential to become an above average major leaguer. If I were the Braves I might have taken a chance on him.
Then again, he could also become the next Jose Constanza so you never know...

I'm still really surprised he was left off of the 40 man...

I've been following him since him and Hamilton made ridiculous numbers in 2012. I think maybe a change of scenery will help humble him, hopefully. His dad wasn't the greatest but he was a major leaguer. JR needs to act and prove like he belongs.

The Astros are starting to fill their outfield with real talent so I see were the roster spot became hard. Also, if internally they believed that he could not make another roster without another year of seasoning, it could be a small financial gain for them without moving pieces or trimming your roster for another year of this wild card.

Yeah I follow him and many other prospects and my heart went out to him. I love the game and it is hard when these type of injuries happen. Then the media and populous that follows want to change everything so these lightning strikes dont happen.

His dad was pretty darn good. A lot like his son...great eye, great wheels.

Doubt he makes the Rangers 25-man roster and likely will return to the Astros org on a very short leash. I could see him finishing 2015 with the Reds org where his dad is the mgr in AAA

If he is returned to the Astros I think they will have to get a piece to move him to CinCin. I don't believe they are just going to walk away like his name is Donovan Tate.

honestly i think hes eric young jr with a scooch more power
lots of similarities, lots of speed, low average/obp ... even down to the ability to play 2b and the OF, and being a son of a former big leaguer. but like i said, i think DD2 has more power than eyj so even with a 300 obp he can add some versatility to the rangers lineup, and steal a bag or maybe pop one late in the game. if the rangers use him right he'll be valuable (kind of like how eyj was with the mets in 2013) if they play him too much he'll get exposed (like eyj in 2014) the rangers have room for him on the 25 man, if he hits at all his speed and defensive versatility would serve the rangers well off the bench.

Does anybody think DeShields Jr. will make the Rangers 25?

Before I saw that the thread was about his son, my snap answer was, "this is the year he (dad) is finally off the Dodgers payroll?"
I kid, but only a little. It wasn't too many years ago that he was still the Dodgers 12th highest-paid 'player', even though he'd been retired for several years. I can't find proof, but I want to say he was still being paid as late as 2010, making one of the worst trades in Dodgers history sting more and more as the years went by.

Well an opportunity to play with L Martin down. But how much time until he is displaced by J Hamilton being added?
