Both are generally accepted nowadays, although it originally began as "champing".

LOL, sorry, English doctorate...I'm trying to get people back to basics....so many generally accepted sayings are categorically wrong....it's almost painful at times.

Hopefully this thread being bumped catches the notice of the non-payers.

This one wouldn't fall into the category of "wrong" except from an extreme prescriptivist perspective. Champ and chomp are reasonably synonymous, and the use of chomp is of long standing.

This is not comparable to the corruption of "all intents and purposes" to "all intensive purposes".
