Default Any help to choose a team?

So I am a basketball fan/collector, but have always enjoyed watching the limited FB we get to see over here in Aus, but I always find it hard to watch when I don't know who I support! lol

I have been able to watch only some of the more popular teams' games so /i. know I am not qualified to make a proper decision as to which teams I should look at supporting? That's where I am hoping some of you can help??

The only criteria would be:

1 - No clashes with the fact that I am a lifetime Spurs fan - whether that affects if you are "allowed" to follow the Texans or Cowboys??

2 - Has to be a "good" team. No in the way of win/loss record, but more like the Spurs in the NBA, where they are not caught up in knucklehead behaviour etc.

Otherwise I am open.

I did run through a dodgy questionaire thing recently which ask questions then ends with a suggestion as to which team you should support, but it came up with the Seahawks and I didn't really want to just jump on a bandwagon while they were at the top! lol

Thanks for any help!

Don't just pick a team.
If you can, watch as much football as possible. Pay attention online. If you find yourself liking a certain team's play style, players, heck, even uniform, go with them. But don't pick until you are satisfied with rooting for that team for the rest of your life.

Yeah, good call! Thanks

I was just hoping I could at least narrow it down to a handful as I don't have enough time to watch every team!

It all starts at the top. Research some owners and see who you like starting with that. A classy organization starts with a smart and caring owner. From there, you can look at either a coach or player you like. A "classy" organization to you could be different than it is to me or anyone else. Just find an owner/coach/player you like and then learn from there. Don't rush into anything and once you make your decision, ease your way in. Nobody likes a belligerent bandwagon or fair weather fan

The closest teams to the Spurs in the NFL are probably(in no order)
Packers
Giants
Steelers
Patriots

Is there any chance that the Raiders do end up moving to SA? Or is that likely to be vetoed by another Texan team?

That's just the owner looking for a new stadium. They've been threatening to move back to L.A. again for years.

Do NOT be a Raiders fan! They are the exact opposite of a classy organization...

Two times in my life I thought I was going to die:
1. Trip to Mexico in college
2. Raiders game versus Bengals in 1991

Consider them crossed off the list! lol

Haha, yeah, I thought this one might be tricky!

Maybe just less than average moronic behavior would be good!

Couldn't be more spot on. I have zero connection to the Eagles whatsoever. I started watching football probably five or six years ago, and somehow I was just really attracted to the Eagles. Fast forward a few years, and most people think I'm from Philly or something considering how much of a fanatic I am about them

So I'd suggest the same thing. Just start watching football, and pick the team that just feels right to you! Let us know who you pick too!

There is close to no chance that the Raiders move to SA. If they are to relocate, it will be to LA. Even if they did relocate to San Antonio, you might be reticent to support them given they are not a 'good' team as per your specified criteria. They haven't been good for a decade. They do however have a rich history, particularly in the 70s and 80s when they dominated in the AFC, and obviously they have the same color scheme as the Spurs.

As for football teams which are similar to the Spurs, I would say the Packers certainly given they are a team which drafts especially well and does not rely on flashy free agency acquisitions. Another team that reminds me somewhat of the Spurs is the Arizona Cardinals, who have an excellent GM/head coach pairing, have drafted well in recent years, and tend to pick up players off the scrap heap and turn them into meaningful contributors.

My advice would be to watch plenty of football before attaching yourself to a particular team. Unlike the NBA, the NFL actually has some degree of parity, and in that respect a team can go from competing for the Superbowl one season, to being amongst the worst in the league the following (for example take the Houston Texans a season ago). Therefore it is harder to find a team who you can depend upon to be consistently good year in and year out. If you want to support a team who is consistently good though, it would be prudent to consider good offensive teams given DVOA (the metric used by football outsiders for measuring NFL teams' offensive and defensive performances over given games and seasons) fluctuates much more defensively than it does offensively.

If I were you I'd assess which positions in football I enjoy watching the most. Most fans I'd imagine enjoy watching quarterback play the most, more devoted fans may prefer watching how offensive and defensive linemen play, or how DBs and wide receivers play etc. If you find that you really enjoy watching a particular position, then I'd consider supporting a team which is strong at that position. For instance if you really enjoyed watching how linebackers play, then perhaps you'd want to support the 49ers or Panthers given both those teams are exceptional at those positions.

As for teams who avoid moronic behavior, this certainly discounts a number of teams. I'd bear in mind that in the NFL, given teams have 53-man rosters, there is a much greater likelihood of someone doing something moronic than say in the NBA.

I hope this advice is helpful.

Texans actually sound like a great team for you. Go with them.

Texans will be good in couple years, once their new coach get's settled in and players that fit his vision.

Why the Raiders?

Appreciate you taking all that time to reply!!
Team didn't have to be "good" as in Winning, just wanted a team that is more about playing the game as opposed to being a bunch of idiots.

I did figure there would be a lot more of it wth 4-5x the roster size.
Have started rounding up some games to sift through. Will probably focus on the 5-6 teams I have listed so far and see if any stand out!

Thanks again!

Thanks for all the suggestions!

I have been watching as many games as I can over the last week or so and while I wouldn't say I have fully decided, I feel drawn to the Texans. Really have entire watching Watt, Foster and Hopkins mainly, but still been looking around at other teams.
