you all are making it sound like Dunn is the worst player ever....Come on now.
I agree he's not hall worthy but after all is said and done: DUNN> Harper ![]() ![]() |

He's been instrumental with every team he's been with. Just my biased opinion though.

I don't think he has any chance for the hall. Yeah, he has a lot of home runs, but not enough as a DH that would make people bat an eye. I think his first year with the White Sox put the nail in that coffin - it was just bad. Yeah, he's recovered a bit, but I still don't think he helps a team enough to make it work. Don't get me wrong, I think he has a great attitude and was always willing to acknowledge that he wasn't getting the job done. I understand why his teammates speak highly of him, but that doesn't get you into the hall. Performance does. I just don't think one trick ponies belong.
Side note - I would be watching him play right now if MLB TV's stupid blackout rules didn't blackout Seattle home games for people in Alaska. I wasn't going to buy a ticket to the game. 3,000 miles of flying generally isn't worth it for a single ballgame - unless the White Sox are in the World Series (I know.. LOL). Also, cable TV is stupid and you couldn't pay me to subscribe. So, meh. Watching one of the other 20+ games available to me. Good job protecting that revenue MLB. |

"Instrumental"? Really, in doing what? No team he has ever been on has made the post season. If by instrumental you mean that he pads his stats, hits tons of meaningless home runs but is a fun teammate to be around than ok. If not, I will then have to disagree.

Adam Dunn in the hall? He could hit 700 homeruns and still probably be way short. I know bWAR has its haters on this board, but this puts it into perspective:
Adam Dunn, because of his horrible defense, has a career WAR of 16.6. In Mike Trout's last 2 full seasons, he's got 19.7. In other words, Mike Trout has added more value in 2 years than Dunn has in his entire career. Put another way, Dunn's bWAR total doesn't even put him in the top 1,000 (position players only!) all time. Active players he's behind on that list include luminaries such as Melky Cabrera, Kelly Johnson, and Lyle Overbay. Career Leaders & Records for WAR Position Players | Baseball-Reference.com |

Thanks Jayson Stark. Ill take his .365 career OBP anyday. Dunn's 2009 stats make WAR (-.6) for what it is.

Dunn's Offensive WAR for his career is 34.3 good for 378th all time. He is tied with the likes of Cecil Cooper, David Justice, and Roger Maris. His defensive WAR is, well, offensive.

Baseball reference has him at -0.4 WAR, and fangraphs has him at 0.9 WAR. That's a fairly big discrepancy, but I'll be the first to tell you that defensive metrics aren't very reliable, and that BR and FG have subtle differences in their WAR calculations. But what those numbers DO tell me is that when an 'average' major leaguer is about 2.0WAR, Dunn doesn't even qualify as being a 'good' player, much less HOF-worthy. |

WAR can certainly give you an idea of the value of someone's season or career at a quick glance. But it is ultimately only one statistic and certainly, like all statistics, can be misused/misintrepreted/miscalculated/misunderstood. It is not the defacto litmus test for Hall of Fame worthiness. If it were, then Rick Reuschel would have been inducted by now.

Dunn is killing it in Oakland so far.
Hopefully playing for a contender changes his mind about retiring. He is the perfect Billy Beane type player. |

However lets look at Mr. October and see why his amount of strikeouts is okay. 1702 RBI, 563 HR, 1551R, .262BA, .490 slug, 5 World Series rings The Big Donkey (why is anyone ok with being called a donkey?) 1161 RBI, 461HR, 1092R, .238BA, .492 slug, how many rings does he have? Plus to say he is going to be able to hit 39 home runs in one more season is a bit pushing it. He has only hit that many 6 times, the last in 2012 when he was healthier. Not going to happen, ever.

So as a long time reds fan my opinion is no. He was a good player but is horrible on defense and always has a poor average. Basically home run or nothing. That has its place on teams but not in the hof

Thome also has more strikeouts than Dunn. Scary thought? Reggie had 7 more seasons and Thome had 8. I can imagine what 7 more years of Dunn would do to the all-time strikeout record, but he would obliterate it.

I am sure if Dunn were to try he could beat Thome's amount of strikeouts in half a season. Eh what am I saying he wouldn't have to even try.

Adam Dunn belongs in the hall of very good. I don't care what his WAR says. The guy always saw a ton of pitches, got on base at a very respectable clip, and has huge power. The strikeouts don't bother me as so many players in today's age post massive strikeout numbers. He is far from a hall of fame player, but he has had a solid career for himself. |
