Incidentally, I'm ok with only showing the highest price paid. If you show all the prices paid or a range, it may be harder to ever get deals done
The range I'd like to see is the average or median sales price plus one standard deviation as the high, and the average or median sales price minus one standard deviation as the low. For cards with a lot of sales, I'd also like to restrict that to sales from the past year. For cards with thin sales, I'll take what I can get. Theoretically, that's what the Beckett high and low prices are - a range of values based on actual real-time selling prices reported by dealers from around the country selling in a variety of venues - auctions, retail card shops, shows, etc. In reality, Beckett has been phoning it in for at least 25 years. If you see a card with 100 or more copies on COMC, that card is overvalued in Beckett. Yet, how frequently do they actually adjust prices? For example, look at 1989 Fleer #548, Ken Griffey Jr RC (Rookie Card). COMC has 192 in stock, for as little as $1. They've sold 484 copies for as much as $5.64. Yet Beckett still has this listed as a $10 card. Using the formula I proposed earlier, this would probably have a value range of about $1 to $3. Which is about right. That is a solid $1 to $3 card. It's a popular seller. But nobody has paid $10 for a raw copy of that card in the past 15 years. Now Consider 2010 Bowman Platinum #1, Stephen Strasburg RC (Rookie Card). This also books in Beckett for $10. COMC has 121 copies on the site for as little as 97 cents. 216 copies have sold for as much a $7.62. But we don't know when those sales took place, and the $7.62 doesn't tell you anything about whether the card is worth 97 cents. A range of recent sales prices would be more helpful in that situation. And once again, Beckett isn't particularly helpful with their opinion of the card's value at $10. Nobody ever paid $10 for that card, even when it was hot. So where does the $10 come from? Other useful metrics would be a median price for all cards sold from a set. This would be particularly useful for figuring out the value of commons, especially from thinly traded sets with low print runs. It would also be useful to see the total number of cards from a set which have been sold vs the total number of cards which are unsold. This would be useful for determining whether a set has any collector interest. Similarly, it would be useful to see the total number of cards from a player which have been sold vs the total number of cards from that player which are unsold. This would also be useful for determining collector interest. A lot of times, I run into a card which is the only copy of that card to ever be on the site. It has no sales history. If I could figure out easily if the set is being collected or the player is being collected, I would be much more likely to purchase that card. |

COMC has always been very responsive to its customers, and they usually find a solution if they agree with it philosophically and if it's physically possible to accomplish. I've seen COMC implement hundreds of customer suggestions over the years, which is why I keep making them.
COMC also has a habit of sometimes saying that they'll do something, and then nothing will happen for a seemingly long time. It could be that you're working frantically behind the scenes on some great new feature, and it could be that you got distracted by something else and forgot about it. So it seems appropriate to remind you once in a while. The "history points" feature has been active for 2 1/2 months now. I've found the ability to see sales history extremely useful, both as a buyer and a seller. As a buyer, I'm more confident purchasing certain cards, even for more than I previously would have paid when everything was a pig-in-a-poke. As a seller, I'm more likely to lower prices on thinly traded items, and more likely to take a discounted offer when an item has little or no sales history. Yet, I'm also more confident holding my ground on certain items. Even when submitting items, I'm more likely to favor players or sets which have a strong sales history than ones which have a weaker history. But gathering up history points with the COMC IQ Test is strictly for the birds. And the actual data being dispensed is of limited value. So I don't mind reminding you from time to time that the feature could use some tweaks. |
