I didn't get what all the hype was about for the original Playmakers Theatre until I got a better look at the embossing and shine. It's a pretty sweet set.

They really are nice. Back in 1999 I actually pulled a Kobe Playmakers when I was a teenager and broke and spending $20 or $30 at a time anyplace that sold cards because it was all the money I had. It was my best pull of that time period, and has been ever since (I don't buy that much). I can still remember to this day looking in Beckett when I first got it and seeing the high value of $200 and thinking WOW, this card is valuable! And you could look at it and pretty much see why...it's just nicer than most things out there. One day when I was a teenager I took the card to my LCS to see if he was interested in it. He offered me $80 and I was basically appalled. I told myself that was ridiculous and never sold it, even when I got out of cards.
I still had the Kobe when I made that post in this thread. Sometimes money outweighs the legitimacy of hanging onto something, so eventually I posted it on eBay and ending up selling it offline for a lot of money. It's the only card I think about that often that I don't have any longer, and I don't even LIKE Kobe to boot! That should tell you something about it. |

The embossing on these cards really is amazing, a lot of nice intricate detail (it's crazy how everything just pops out of the card), plus it has a very beautiful gold finish. The popularity of this set, shouldn't come off as a surprise once you see a real one in hand.
