Default Top Player of ALL-TIME

What are your thoughts?

I'm in a baseball ranking kind of mood... Top 10 players of all-time in my opinion (not considering steroids):

10)Albert Pujols
9)Roger Clemens
8)Ty Cobb
7)Walter Johnson
6)Hank Aaron
5)Stan Musial
4)Willie Mays
3)Barry Bonds
2)Ted Williams
1)Babe Ruth.

Honorable mention (11-20): Honus Wagner, Mickey Mantle, Rickey Henderson, Randy Johnson, Rogers Hornsby, Pete Rose, Mike Schmidt, Alex Rodriguez, Cy Young, Frank Robinson

Ken Griffey Jr. was a tough one to leave out, but I placed Frank Robinson in the 20 spot over Griffey. They had almost identical careers offensive wise, but I have to give the edge to Robinson for hits and average.

IMO

1. Babe Ruth

I've come to realize that it doesn't matter what order the other guys in the top 10 or 20 or 100 are in, number 1 is and always will be Babe Ruth.

My top 3 would be Mays, Ruth, Williams.

Willie mays is without question the most complete offensive and defensive player in history, that's why I give him the nod for #1 overall.

Just like ranking basketball players... Jordan always on top.

Why would you put Pujols in there? Not even an honorable mention imo

Because what he did in a decade of baseball takes most Hall of Famers 20 years to do.

I like the top 5 as most people leave out Musial. 2 interesting facts about him are that he was never once ejected during his career and he ended up with exactly the same number of hits at home as he did away.

I personally wouldn't have any pitcher in the top 10 or maybe even top 20. So might go

6. Mantle
7. Aaron
8. Gehrig
9. Cobb
10. Alex Rodriguez/Griffey Jr.

To me the most dominate pitcher of all time is Pedro. What he was able to do in a hitters park and during the biggest offensive era is amazing.

Lou Gehrig should be honorable mention at least.

But you leave off some of the most memorable HOF ever, Sandy Koufax, Hank Aaron, Lou Gehrig....

I'd put Derek Jeter on that list before Pujols.

Babe Ruth and then..whoever. No one could pitch and hit like him. The top 10 should start after him, because no one could come close to matching up.

Red Sox homerism here, But Teddy Ballgame gave away almost 5 full seasons in his prime to serve our country. There is no doubt in my mind he would have topped the Babe in HRs had he played those seasons. He had an OPS of 1.096 at 41 Years Old!!

10. Pedro Martinez - Considering the era he pitched in, was the most dominant pitcher of all-time over the years 97-2003
9. Ken Griffey, Jr
8. Stan Musial
7. Pete Rose
6. Hank Aaron
5. Walter Johnson
4. Ty Cobb
3. Babe Ruth
2. Willie Mays
1. Ted Williams

And how about an honorable mention for Miguel Cabrera? Look at what he has done playing the majority of his career in cavernous ballparks. I don't know if he makes a push for 700 HRs, but had he played in some other places, I'd say he would be past 400 already

ZiPS actually projected out his stats at 704 hrs, 2524 RBIs, 2488 runs and a .346/.488/.643 line. I have to think he would have played 1 more year for the record. He is on the short list for best of all time for sure.

He has surpassed Pujols as the best of his era, and is working his way toward the best of all-time. If he stays clean and ends up over 700, he is my #1 or #2 undoubtedly.

He is also going to take serious aim at the all time Doubles record as well. He is at 406 presently. Tris Speaker (speaking of honorable mentions) is far and away #1 at 792.

IMO you have to put Barry Bonds in the top 10 even if he apparently did do steroids. Bonds is by far the greatest hitter of our generation if you like it or not.

My stats were for Ted Williams and what they would have projected had he not missed 5 years for 2 wars. Are you talking about Miggy? If so, way too early to even put him in the conversation as greatest ever.

Exactly, which is why my OP stated, steroids aside. Steroids don't help you make contact with a ball... just saying. But steroids aside, Bonds career is one that will always be controversial, but undeniably, amazing.

Yes for Miggy... But that is why he is not in my top 10... But he is the best of the player to debut post - 2000... and is a first ballot HOFer if he retires tomorrow.

As for Williams, yeah, that sounds about right. Probably could have hung around for another year to top the Babe had he been that close. He did hit 28 HRs in about 100 games his last year. Might have hit 1000 HRs if he played at old Yankee stadium.
