Default Vintage grading question

Scored a 1954 Topps Ted Williams #1 from a group break of Heroes of Sport on Blowout TV this week.

Started to do some research on prices the card has hit both raw and graded. Even from the video, it's clear the card is off center. Won't know corners, surface, etc. until it gets here on Thursday or Friday.

So, my question is whether it inherently helps potential value on vintage to grade it and lock in the condition with no questions, but face the possibility of a mid or low grade. The difference in raw vs. graded sales have been about what you'd expect.

Thoughts?

Send it to PSA and make sure you put "No Qualifier" to determine the grade. This will lower the grade one notch but is more attractive to most buyers ie, "PSA 7 OC" (off centered) with "no qualifier" becomes PSA 6.

Interesting, thanks. Never would have thought of that.

no qualifiers will knock it down 2 PSA grades, i thought.

Yup. When calculating the overall score of a "set", a modifier brings the grade down two.

Sorry that is correct. Two grades down without a qualifier

Grade it and if you don't like it, cut it open. I have bad luck with grading so I never do it.
