Default Do you remember when...

Let's do this.

Do you remember when...
Exquisite base cards were hard to come by?
Allen Iverson GU cards were never less than $4?
You used to buy cards from a vending machine?
You thought the vending machine cards were going to be worth anything?
Game-used cards first came out?
Ken Griffey Jr's UD rookie card was being sold for like $100?
Decoys didn't exist?
You had to buy your cards offline?
You sold a card for very little that was worth a whole lot? (Gordie Howe auto worth $200 for $25)
You got excited over base cards?

Add on.

I remember pulling both the KGJ UD rookie and Brien Taylor rookies. And yes, the days when THE card to pull was a simple star rookie card...or even those old meaningless inserts they used to throw in there. Those were even exciting.

Damn how things have changed.

I used to love the way that Stadium Club's cards smelled. Kind of an industrial, plastic smell or something. It was that coating they put on them...those were the sh!t back in the day. I remember pulling a Cal Ripken Jr "Members Choice" insert outta '91 or '92 I believe. Thought it had changed my life!

Do you remember when...
Darius Miles and Quentin Richardson were fan favorites
Jay Williams was supposed to be the next big thing?
Card companies put out cards for even the most obscure players with the worst stats? (Uwe Blab, Yinka Dare, Obinna Ekezie, etc..)
What you know about OBINNA!??

When you pulled a card numbered /5000 and thought you hit a rare card, and it actually was compared to the rest of the print run.

  • When Finest was so new that people could not tell the difference between regular cards and the refractors
  • A pack of sports card cost the same as a Candy Bar (I remember 1973 Topps were 10 cents each)
  • How important it was to get your Sports Collectors Digest before everyone else so you could get the bargains
  • 100 Count Player Lots of all of the 1988 Topps Baseball Cards. $29.99 for 100 Mike Dunne anyone?
  • Topps Basketball Packs always came in those cool Topps Fun Bags because they could not sell them in the season
  • Nine Page Sheets had the openings on the side vs. the tops of the cards

Do you remember when...
Tons of card stores were still open?
Convenient stores used to sell higher end products? Or cards at all! (I remember a few sold SP Authentic back in the day, now the only type of store like that I see cards at is 7-11 and they are retail crud!)
Vince Carter was being compared to Michael Jordan?
Nobody thought certain players would ever be stars? (Gerald Wallace, Jermaine O'Neal, Michael Redd, etc.)
People sold cards by book value?
You could feel the jersey cards because the company would always put them at the back of the pack? (I think it was Pacific Ice that did it.)
The bubble gum in the pack became hard but you still ate it?

You didn't have to wait for redemptions, the cards were actually in the packs!
