Default Could Deshaun Watson gain Hobby relevance again?

We know why he has fallen.. but if given the starting role, and has reasonable success and leads the Browns to the playoffs, can he gain hobby relevance and will his prices climb? Some people will always dislike him, and it’s understandable why. Will the hobby buy into him and see his prices raise? I’m curious as to people’s opinions.

I think it’ll be unanimous in here. His hobby relevancy is cooked.

He would have to win MVP and a Super Bowl.

No.

1. He's always injured and not good at football anymore.
2. He's a terrible human.

He has spent 4 years in Cleveland, missing all of last year.

In the 3 years he actually played, he is 9-10 with 3,365 yards, 19 TD against 12 INTs.

He's on the wrong side of 30.

I honestly believe Cleveland would be wise not to play him. Where's the sense in stumbling to 6-11 with a QB who's gone as soon as the season ends? They should go with their now-2nd year QBs and try and build a future, or just tank the whole thing completely.

If we're talking about the last time DeShaun Watson was relevant (for his activities on the field, not off the field) then it must be 2020.

So be sure to get vaccinated, 2 weeks to stop the spread, etc, etc...

Named starter= small bump

20 TDs 5-1 start= bigger bump

#3 seed playoff run= bump

Not likely but yes, if he starts, comes out hot, makes playoff push then he gets some hobby love.

If anything else, no. Lol

Not a chance, at this point he has no shot of breaking any career records or making the HOF. If he plays lights out this year and wins a Super Bowl there could be a small short term bump but it won't last. All of that is Highly Unlikely though.

Correct. All evidence points to Watson not being good anymore. If he actually is named the starter, it does tell you what the Browns really think of the two QBs they just drafted. If they think Sanders has any future potential, they should just let him take his lumps this year and see where he ends up.

I think you are asking two different questions here. Will he be hobby relavent again? No, he won't. Will his prices rise? Yes, some people will buy into the hype of what he could do this season. In fact, his prices are already rising. In December, I purchased a lot on eBay for two of his Select XRC cards, one in the Panini case and the other a PSA 9, for a total of $10.59, which included shipping and tax. I recently sold each card for $30 each. He may not be hobby relavent in the grand scheme of things, but his prices are rising.

I agree with this^^^ If he starts out hot, his prices will rise.

Browns could also be showcasing him and letting teams know he can actually still play in hopes of dumping some/all of his salary.

That has to be one of the worst contracts signed in professional sports.

No... but what you will see if that he regains the starting job and has any success, a lot of bag holders will by hyping him back up in an effort to get rid of what they have.

Nobody is going to actually collect the guy

Salary aside (which is a huge aside), Watson probably has the most upside of any available QB, assuming he's recovered from the Achilles.

Teams have shown to be desperate for QBs, but at the same time, a lot of teams are willing to sit out this year for next year's crop (Jets, Dolphins, Cardinals). Which is actually good for Watson bc the only other team he would go to is a potential contender whose QB suffers an injury in camp/preseason.

But he is not available. Watson is still under contract. It isnt like he has been sitting as an unsigned free agent. Like Kaepernick was/is/has.

And just like Kap. Most GM's will avoid Watson, to avoid the circus train that would follow.

I bet we would see Carr, Garoppolo, Tyrod or Russ Wilson land on a starter needy team before you see anyone trading anything for Watson. Which is the only way he leaves. And that is a big IF The Browns eat most of the $46MIL Wats is due for 2026. Which is your "aside"

Kapernick also blows, why is he relevant whatsoever here? He's now turning 39 in Nov. He's been toast for years, completely irrelevant.

Agreed on the rest. Maybe Tyrod is washed at this point though but sure.

The bolded part of your quote is why Kap's relevant to the convo. Watson hasn't played more than 7 games in a season since 2020. He's missed two of that last six years, when he did play, he did not play well.

I think that's the comparison being made. Both are toast and not relevant.

Even if Watson had a monster comeback I can't see collectors excited to collect him.

I feel like what can't be overlooked is that in the past 5 NFL season, Watson has a total to 19 Touchdowns and 12 Interceptions.

5 seasons.
