Topps released regular "modern gloss" sets for the so-called "Sequel Trilogy" of films beginning in 2015 with "The Force Awakens". Of note to original design fans, however, were the "Journey To..." sets released in advance of each of the card sets dedicated to the new movies. The base sets in each of the "Journey To..." sets employed the original blue star-filled design on vintage-style card stock, much like the Heritage cards shown in the post just before this one.

Since these were "the-story-so-far" sets, there are images from the original 1977 film on some of the cards, using pictures never before seen on the classic design. I will add a gallery of those specific cards once I can get them separated out and scanned. There are several really nice ones.

In the meantime, here are some stickers from the "Journey To The Force Awakens" set, which, while using the same design, did feature a couple of characters who didn't appear in the original Star Wars film:

Even better, perhaps, was this 9 card chase set that utilized the Series 5 Orange border which neatly continued on with the main subject matter of that final 1977/78 set, that being behind the scenes shots.

We aren’t too far off from the 50th anniversary of this set! What do you think Topps will do to celebrate? I guess we will get multiple blue star field releases (maybe even sports sets to commemorate) and then at least one new SW set with 50th buybacks.

Yes, a 50th Anniversary set in the style of the 30th & 40th sets are virtually guaranteed, as popular as those were. Speaking of 1977 buybacks, I plan to post pictures of mine from 30th & 40th shortly. There were also some in the Topps 2011 American Pie set and possibly the 2013 Topps 75th Anniversary Set, although those are much, much harder to find.
