Hello, everyone.
I am a Green Bay Packers and San Diego Padres fan. I just got into collecting because my FIL gave me about 30k cards to comb through and sell for him. A vast majority are 88-95 junk wax, but buried in the mass of card boxes I found nearly complete 73-75 Topps baseball and handful of 69-70 Topps football: Hank Aaron, Nolan Ryan, Reggie Jackson, Ray Nitschke, Bart Starr, etc. These were cards my FIL collected when he was 10 or 11 years old and he took care of them. Nothing survived me being 10 years old but here I am holding a piece of his personal history and a piece of genuine Americana. I’m hooked. I’ve been trying to piece together a collection of all the Padre and Packer HOF rookie cards. From his collection, I found great condition Tony Gwynn rookies from Fleer, Topps, and Donruss. They’re at SGC getting graded. While not a HOF’er, I also found a 1974 Randy Jones “Washington Nat’l League” that I figured would be a cool card to encapsulate for a Cy Young winner. The junk wax is worthless but it sure is cool seeing all of the players he took time collecting in hopes that they would turn out to be something. He has a ton of Big Hurt rookies to go along with Ryan Klesko and Eric Karros.
So now I’m starting my own speculation collection. Weeding through Henderson, Holliday, Rutschman, and Rodriguez to see who is worth collecting and who is most likely to flame out and become a footnote. Right now, it’s mostly just single buying augmented by a hobby box drop or two. Hopefully, I can start building something to pass along to my kids the same way my FIL passed something along to me.
