Walked to work, a mile each way, then did a 3-mile walk. About 90 minutes total walking for roughly 5 miles.

If I drove to work I'd be a massive tub of goo.

A Cliff Noted Version of driving in Wisconsin. The winter version....

I rep an area, so I drive all over.

I had work in Green Bay. 1 hour and 45 minutes. Drive basically as fast as I am willing to go with the State Patrol in mind. I am there for 4 hours or so and during that time we get dumped on (snow). 3 hours and 15 minutes on the way back. Ive driven in stuff like that all my life and with the truck I have willing to move along, even in snow, at a decent rate. Most the traffic was going 30-40MPH (interstate). If you wanted to to jump in the passing lane (hadn't been plowed), you were gonna white knuckle it. (depending on your vehicle).

I did talk with a guy from Michigan while I was there. He said he got 34" of snow in 24 hours. He said he snowblowed every hour. Now that I have never experienced.

Fixed that for you. For real though, walking to work sounds like a dream. It’s nice to have a forcing function. I WFH and can go for a nice 2.5 mile walk during lunch, but I don’t have to.

Currently I am about a 15 minute commute

Longest I have ever had was 45 minutes

Shortest I've ever had was from my bed to my computer desk.

Currently:

Mon - 2.5 hrs roundtrip via public transportation and work shuttle
Tues - 40-min roundtrip via car
Thurs - 40-min roundtrip via car

I've done it all though.

2013-14: 4-5 hrs roundtrip via car
2014-16: 12-min roundtrip drive or 30-min roundtrip bike (usually did the latter with occasional rollerblading and walks sprinkled in)
2016-2019: Full-time WFH
2020-2021: 2.5 hrs roundtrip via public transportation/work shuttle x 5 until early March 2020, then full-time WFH
2022-onward: Hybrid schedule (commute time varied depending on which sites I covered)

From all these experiences, I most enjoyed the 30-minute roundtrip bike (or 35-min rollerblading/1 hr 20 min walk roundtrip) work commutes. During that time, I lived in a beach town (Santa Monica) in my 20s and had a really healthy lifestyle (exercised a lot, ate well, slept enough and good, etc).

So, weird to say but hairy option for the win.

Noice! The idea of rollerblading sounds awesome. Not the right terrain here. Rough pavement and really hilly.

On a good day 45 minutes to an hour. If you know Maryland at all I work in Annapolis and live on the shore and have to battle the bay bridge beach traffic so during the summer on Thursdays through Sunday it can take 1.5 hours or 6 hours. Sometimes if I get stuck working a double shift it is torture. 16 more months till retirement!!

10 second walk to my home office.
Have to go to the office once or twice a month and it is about a 40 minute drive.
