It only takes one collector. You gotta be on good terms to get access.
And not all are into it for the money. I get how this works on a much less hobby-relevant level. When I think of selling Nesmith, I can think of almost no scenarios where I have a conversation that gets me to the table. At least from the limited National footage I watched. So what do you do? You patiently wait and find product that the Rodman collector will consider of acceptable value, either based on potential or actual performance. There are probably certain 90s cards of Rodman that are unicorns floating around, that he would trade for say green PMGs of which he has doubles. Or, that collector may be looking to diversify to modern mid-career, playoffs. Emerging name, more risky gamble. Then I am in the discussion and I have leapfrogged. And now I have that Rodman that is much harder to source than vaulted, priced, and tagged MJs. More likely, what happened is, a supercollector similar to me, but buying at a much cheaper time with fewer issues, had a comprehensively deep collection that got destroyed in a flood. I mean I could literally drop a small carrying case of cards into a river and the supply of rare AA would go down by 10-15 percent. Last edited by Nomad; 08-13-2025 at 11:24 AM. |

the amount of fakes always scared me away but funny story
I used to look in discount section of my lcs when I was a teen. I believe the packs were $1.49 opened a ton of packs of 2000-01 hoops hot prospects...never hit anything except a mike miller jersey. One day I pulled a vince carter autographics /250 - gave it to my nextdoor neighbor for free for god knows whatever reason. One of the cards I wish I could have back. Always wanted to buy another one

I could actually ask for it back but probably won't - I haven't talked to him in 15 years but bet he would give it to me for free
will probably buy another one

Lawrence Moten became the 2nd player from the inaugural 1996-97 set to pass away, following Bobby Phills.

That’s wild considering Bobby died over 25 years ago. |

- Lorenzen Wright, being in both 1997-98 and 1998-99 sets, was murdered in 2010.
- Robert Traylor, being in both 1998-99 (rookie) and 1999-2000 sets, died of heart attack in 2011. There might be others having passed away that I am not aware of. Feel free to chime in.

Thought that Montross fought successfully against cancer. I stand corrected.
Montross passed away in 2023. ![]() So Moten and Rogers are actually the 3rd and 4th overall from the 1996-97 set to have passed away.

Elden Campbell passed away on December 2.
He is in 1997-98, 1998-99, 1999-2000 and 2000-01 sets. I don't have the 2000-01 card, though anyone can find an image of it easily.
