Default Are you steering away from modern autographed cards?

I don’t think they teach kids cursive anymore. I just saw Roman Anthony’s auto and laughed a bit. A couple of slash strokes of the pen…

So anybody else turned off by modern player’s penmanship and are not high on collecting autographed cards like they used to?

Looks like he does a nice full signature for Fanatics memorabilia.

Jackson Merrills is awful also.

I hate to judge them but seems like the ones that have a bigger ego don't sign well

Yeah, it's common for athletes to have a simplified, more easily repeatable signature for trading cards or free in-person signings, but have a more elaborate or visually appealing signature for memorabilia where they get paid more.

It's not unique to this generation of athletes, but it seems to be a lot more common than in the past, and the simplified signatures on trading cards nowadays seem to more often look ugly or very low-effort.

As long as people in the hobby keep putting high values on their slop signatures, they have no reason to change.

Barry Bonds has a big ego and a beautiful full signature that he signed for Topps a decade ago.

For sure. I still remember Kris Bryant had one signature for Topps (K. Bryant) and then another for in-person autos at a Cubs game (KB with a smiley face).

Ah, 'ol Blue Eyes...We'll always have 2016.

Well imagine if you had to sign your name 10,000 plus times a year. Your autograph would get worse

I mean I'm just steering away from Ultra Modern completely regardless. Anything printed after 2019, with the exception of a few very specific sets/parallels seem destined to collapse when people realize how much is out there.

Plus the added benefit of not having to worry about injuries or gambling is a real plus.

Worse, yes, but a scribble or initials is practically not a signature.

It's like illiterate Shoeless Joe Jackson famously signing his name with an X.

Even Shohei Ohtani altered and simplified his signature after 2019.

Some players have to sign thousands of autographs per product times 40 products, every year of their career.

I don’t blame them for taking shortcuts, and anything but a rookie autograph has that much less meaning because of it.

I don't do X-line or Initial-graphs 99% of the time.

There might be a few rarer exceptions, but if they don't care about signing then I don't care about their autos if they are like this.

If it's a nice autograph it has to be from somebody else like a parent signing them. Cause if it isn't it's a guaranteed stick figure and a flatline.

Yes, yes I am steering away from modern autographs but for more reasons than a chicken scratch or simplified signature.

Steering away from modern cards in general and Fanatics cards specifically.

Not sure what's worse, simplified signatures or this nonsense.

The majority of todays players sign with initials or some form of chicken scratch.
That they have to sign 1000's of signatures is a bad excuse.
Players from 30 years ago signed 7000 cards for Signature Rookies, Classic, Front Row, Courtside, Superior Pix and Pro Line and almost all are full and legible.
I collect signed index cards of players from the past and to a T almost every signature is full and very legible.

Cursive handwriting is quickly dying.

I posted this a few days ago in the Bo Nix thread in the football forum:

What's wrong with the bottom or the middle one?
