There's a nice CRASO blue auto BGS 9.5/10 min gem that recently showed up on eBay. $80K plus free shipping!
There is a BCRASO blue auto PSA 10 in Fanatics Premier at 120K with 6 days to go. I feel like 80K is a fair price for the BGS 9.5. Crazy to think 80K is a fair price...I wish I had 80K to spend... |

Well this arrived about an hour ago. Really glad to add it to my pc.
2013 BBM Ohtani rookie. This was his very first flagship rookie card. I think that as people start to dig into his card catalog they'll want to add his first RC.

It appears to me that virtually all Ohtani RC cards are hitting all time highs (or near all time highs). So what is everyone's buying strategy going forward?
Obviously people that were opening a ton of wax in 2018 (or did not open their wax) are in great shape going forward. Even those that started collecting Ohtani in 2021 I am sure are happy with the price they paid for their cards. I was thinking what would someone entering the hobby now or in the near future think about starting to collect Ohtani? To them today's prices are going to seem normal. I really don't see demand slowing down (unless the economy goes into a recession). At the same time I am not sure why I am hesitant to pay today's prices. I can't just stop collecting Ohtani and just sit on my collection. I am going to have to be patient and strategic I guess this off season.

Do what I'm doing right now and go through all your 2018 binders and pull any nice Ohtani out to send to PSA. Frankly, I'm doing it with Judge and 2017's also,
So far I have every base and insert for Ohtani from Archives, A&G, and the Topps factory set as well as a base archives snapshot and a A&G Cabinet top loader rookie. Chat GPT says its a PSA 8.5 but thats because its interpreting a dark mark at the top of the card as a stain, but that dark mark appears on every single copy of that card, including those slabbed as a PSA 10. Not a fan of non-liscensed cards I'm sure they will have there niche following but where he made his name is in the big leagues not the Japanese league. So because of this his pre-liscensed cards will have limited growth. Just my .02

I was a bit lucky, opened a ton of 2018 so had a nice start. Didn't really start my gold run until last winter and even that late in the game really glad I started then. Started the SSP and SP journey during spring training ish and even later in the game glad I started then and not now. |

I kind of did this with '18 Ohtani's except not sending anything off to PSA or any other TPG. Didn't think to do the same with '17 Judge since he's had cards predating his rookie year since 2013.

Got excited from the October hype and added back a junior Gildtani - stuck in customs purgatory till today. My favorite set <3.

Thanks, guys!
And BBM is a legit card and deservingly expensive. That said, I grew up with MLB and I only love MLB cards (and maybe some airbrushed 1st Bowman ). 30 teams in North America versus 12 teams on an island country - it's apples to oranges. I however do completely understand the appeal. That's his origin and it can't be ignored. |

The talent gap is closing, yes, but it is a very different brand of baseball. MLB is also now the destination for many talented J-league players. Nomo/Ichiro, and now Sho blasted that door wide open. The stigma is changing but it's not necessarily gaining parity with MLB.
Also, credit where credit is due. California is larger than Japan in terms of size. Imagine fitting 12 teams in California with high quality talent. Baseball is LOVED in Japan. Arguably more so than the country it originated from. |

i am not saying that NBP has or ever will catch MLB as a whole
MLB is the top of the mountain. NBPers are coming to the MLB not the other way around (unless you are MLB washed) what i am saying is that traditionally NBP Players have been looked as as "less than" as far as talent. that is where the stigma begain. That is certainly changing. i am in no way saying that NBP Cards (even Sho's) will be "worth more" than MLB Cards. There certainly is room for both in the hobby particularly when most new folks will be priced out on 2018 Sho stuff. Ohtani and now Yoshi have shined a HUGE spotlight on what can come out of the NBP (that is if Nomo and Ichiro were not impressive enough)

I can get behind that
![]() On a side note, imagine having an Aaron Judge or Bobby Jr. being plucked out of MLB and moving to an elite alien league where games are being played while you're sleeping. Not only that, but you never stop following Aaron/Bobby and stay up late/get up early just to watch them play live. That's Japan. |
