Two of my childhood/teen/adult heroes.

J.R. went to my church and Nolan grew up and lived about 15 miles away in Alvin, Texas.

Having both on the same cards was a bonus!

Both cards arrived yesterday.

The bottom Ryan is almost photographic quality printing. Kudos to the pressman!

Ray Rippelmeyer spent 50 years in professional baseball yet only part of the 1962 season as a MLB pitcher
with the Senators appearing in 18 games with one start.
He had a long career as a pitching coach for various organizations.
In college at Southeast Missouri State he was a collegiate All-American in basketball.
Ray was born in 1932 on the family farm in Valmeyer, Illinois and lived his entire life in the small town.
He passed away in September, 2022 at the age of 89.

These two cards are 1961 Topps #276 (although he never played for the Reds)
and 1962 Topps #271.
I acquired these recently to go with the signed index card.

The Ryan/Richard strikeout leader cards are cool. JR Richard had over 300 strikeouts in both years that these cards where featured, whereas Ryan was in the 200s. Richard had that stroke at the age of 30 during the 1980 season and never threw another pitch. He did live another 40 years though, which is good. Guy was probably headed to the HOF if not for the stroke.

That was a sore spot for the Astros when that happened.
J.R. wasn't pitching as well as he had been and he kept telling them that he didn't feel right and that something was wrong with his arm.

Management wouldn't directly say it but they were giving off vibes that J.R. was just giving excuses for his diminished production.
When he went down with a stroke, there was lots of crow to be feasted on locally.
For me it was a gut punch as he was one of my favorites.

As I'm still waiting for my SGC order, I'll post another older one. This card probably isn't worth much, but I think it's adorable, so I sent it in for my PC.

Recent show pick up. I fully expected the back to have some noticeable issue when I saw the grade and didn't see any major issues on the front. Nope. These new grades are tough! It's easy to find T206 in early-graded PSA-2 slabs on ebay that look much worse than this one, and appear to be of lower technical grade.

There's a light crease across the upper left corner, and some slight chipping into the top edge, similar to rubber band damage as far as placement. I want to scan this one and see if I get a better result than the washed out PSA scan.

I didn't even check the pop report before buying it, but turns out the Sweet Caporal 350/25 back has a total PSA pop of just 10 graded compared to the Sweet Caporal 350/30 pop of 116 total graded.

Don't recall ever seeing it before.

I took advantage of Ebay seller Battersbox having a store sale two weeks ago by acquiring a few O=Pee-Chee cards to go with my signed index cards.

Ron Theobald only has these two playing days mainstream production cards -
1971 Topps and OPC #77.

Theobald only played two seasons with the Brewers in 1971 and 72.
He led the American League and still holds the Brewers team record for sacrifice bunts in a season with 19.
Bob Uecker gave him the nickname "The Little General" as he stood 5'8" and weighed 165 pounds and somewhat resembled Napoleon.
After retiring from baseball he worked at UPS for 16 years and was a special ed school bus driver which he really enjoyed.
Ron passed away at 72 in April of 2016.

Got this one in the mail today. Old and most expensive card now in my collection. Of course, the slab cracked in transit from seller to me. But I reached out, and they paid for me to reslab it. I have to pay shipping to and from SGC, but at least the seller responded to help. It's headed back to SGC in the next day or so.

Great Williams! The only playing days Ted Williams "cards" I have is his portrait and action 1952 Wheaties. Definitely want his 1941 Playball or 1950 Bowman.

Yea, I'm trying to work my way backwards to the bigger cards. And I love that it's a 1. I hate the slab arrived cracked, and I am sending it back to SGC. But at least the seller offered to pay for the reholder (I still have to pay to ship there and back though).

Awesome '56! Is that a staple hole? My '55 Aaron has a couple of those. Makes for great deals

It may be. Because it doesn't go all the way through the card to the back. But it doesn't take away from overall eye appeal.

I acquired a 1949 Eureka Sportstamp of Sibby Sisti off Ebay to go with my vintage signed index card and beater 1951 Bowman #170.

Sisti played for the Boston Bees (later Braves) from 1939 to 1954.
He served our country in the Coast Guard from 1943 to 1945.
He also appeared in the 1984 baseball movie The Natural as the manager for Pittsburgh.

Sisti passed away in April of 2006 at the age of 85.

Picked up pretty cool piece from 1975 Sport Hobbyist. It's a photo of Jackie sliding into home. Pretty neat photo, although it's not worth much of anything.

I had never heard of those before.

Love the vintage look!

I have raw copies of Dr. J's 1974-75 Topps and 1975-76 Topps. I've kept an eye out for his 1972-73 topps all star and thought this was a nice copy. I would like to pick up his rookie card but I have a lot of cards higher on my want list at the moment.

I picked up a few more Sam Mele cards to go with my signed GPC.
The GPC has scrapbook glue but I like it in that it was signed and postmarked August, 1950 - during his playing days.

Mele served in World War 2
Played from 1947 - 1956
And managed the Twins from 1961 - 1967

1952 Topps (I collect miscuts!)
1954 Topps
1954 Bowman
1955 Bowman
1964 Topps
1965 Topps
1966 Topps

Nice Julius Erving! I used to own his rc. Would love to buy one again some day.
I just picked this one up at the Toronto Expo

Undecided if I crack the slab and send it into PSA.

As I said in post 210, I won this at Rabbit Hole Auctions. It arrived cracked, so I reached out to them and they paid for me to have it reslabbed. I only had to pay shipping there and back, which was only about $30. But it came back yesterday, while I was out of town. So just opened it this morning. Looks really sharp for a 1. If not for that pin hole/paper issue between his hat and the edge, it probably would've graded a lot higher.
